Exciting opportunity to assist the Volunteer Program for Fairfax County’s Department of Neighborhood and Community Services!
Operates under the supervision of the Department of Neighborhood and Community Services (NCS) Volunteer Program Supervisor in the Inclusive Engagement and Targeted Interventions Division. Assists with the planning and administration of a comprehensive volunteer program providing volunteer opportunities for youth, adults, older adults, and families of all ability levels. Works with NCS, other county agencies, and community stakeholders to develop volunteer opportunities and recruit volunteers of all abilities and ages following current safety protocols and best practices. Supports with training and onboarding, occasional supervision, and recognition of volunteers. Communicates with volunteers by email, phone calls, virtual newsletters, and in-person at events. Collaborates with residents, community organizations, across NCS centers and business areas, and with other county agencies to support and promote programs and services that address needs and equitable access to opportunities to enhance well-being and community inclusion. Provides on-site support to NCS staff when needed. Uses volunteer management database software to recruit, onboard, place, and track volunteers. Runs reports from the volunteer management database to fulfill data reporting requirements. Other duties as assigned based upon agency and county needs.
Additional Work Schedule Requirements: Some evenings and weekends.

General Duties
Assists in the program delivery duties of the assigned facilities;
Ensures staff compliance with operating procedures and safety/security standards;
Informs the public of pertinent rules and regulations;
Directs residents to private and public resources and programs;
Delivers customer service by distributing literature and providing information;
Assists as a liaison between County agencies, residents and other community centers.
Programming
Assists management in the daily program delivery of several specialized programs and special events at assigned facilities;
Assists management in the collection of data and records management necessary for the operation and evaluation of programs.
Required Knowledge Skills and Abilities

- Knowledge of the principles and practices of recreation center management;
- Ability to assist center management with the collection and tracking of program data and outcomes needed for compiling administrative reports;
- Ability to use a personal computer, applicable software, and peripheral equipment;
- Ability to direct and coordinate the work of subordinate staff and volunteers;
- Ability to maintain effective working relationships with staff, citizen groups, and the public;
- Ability to communicate effectively both verbally and in writing.
Employment Standards
MINIMUM QUALIFICATIONS:
Any combination of education, experience, and training equivalent to the following: (Click on the aforementioned link to learn how Fairfax County interprets equivalencies)
Graduation from high school or a GED issued by a state department of education, plus one year of related experience in a recreation center or facility, OR one year of experience organizing and coordinating public recreation activities or community outreach, as applicable to the position.
NECESSARY SPECIAL REQUIREMENTS:
The appointee to this position will be required to complete a criminal background check and a Child Protective Services Registry check to the satisfaction of the employer.
PREFERRED QUALIFICATIONS:
- Degree in recreation, sociology, social work, public health, public administration, therapeutic recreation or related field;
- Prior experience with the following:
- Managing volunteers
- Working with youth and family program participants and volunteers
- Working with volunteers of diverse backgrounds
- Working with volunteers of different abilities and skill levels
- Familiarity with volunteer management database software
- Volunteer coordination and/or developing volunteer opportunities
- Use of virtual and video-conferencing platforms.
PHYSICAL REQUIREMENTS:
Work is generally sedentary in nature. However, incumbent may be required to do some walking, standing, bending, and carrying items up to 25 pounds. Ability to operate keyboard-driven equipment. Ability to communicate verbally and in writing. Sufficiently mobile to attend meetings at various locations and make presentations to county staff and community. All duties performed with or without reasonable accommodations.
