Job Announcement
Since 1977, the Fairfax County Department of Transportation (FCDOT) has served the Fairfax County community by enhancing mobility, safety, and the quality of life of residents, businesses, and visitors through planning, coordinating, funding, implementing, and sustaining a multimodal transportation system. FCDOT is seeking a motivated, highly qualified, and public service-oriented Transportation Planner III to join the Capital Projects and Traffic Engineering Division. Serving as Transportation Planner III, this position is primarily responsible for developing, reviewing, and managing studies and projects for multimodal projects, such as intersection, roadway, pedestrian, bicycle, transit, and parking facilities, and providing routine and complex transportation planning, traffic engineering, and design analyses and reviews for these project design plans and studies. In a dynamic and quickly evolving environment, this position will provide a challenging and rewarding experience for an individual invested in achieving the County’s ambitious multimodal transportation goals.

MINIMUM QUALIFICATIONS:

Graduation from an accredited four-year college or university with a bachelor's degree in civil engineering, urban, regional or transportation planning, or a closely related field; plus four years of professional experience in civil engineering, urban, regional or transportation planning, or a closely related field.
CERTIFICATES AND LICENSES REQUIRED:
A valid motor vehicle driver's license.
NECESSARY SPECIAL REQUIREMENTS:
The appointee to this position will be required to complete a driving record check to the satisfaction of the employer.
PREFERRED QUALIFICATIONS:
PHYSICAL REQUIREMENTS:
Work is generally sedentary. Ability to do some walking, standing, bending and carrying of items up to 25 pounds in weight. Ability to input, access, and retrieve info from a computer. Must be able to operate a motor vehicle. All duties performed with or without reasonable accommodations.

Responsibilities include:
- Preparing, overseeing, and monitoring program and project schedules.
- Preparing project planning studies, project scopes and schematic functional layouts for multimodal transportation improvement projects.
- Managing and reviewing consultant studies and designs.
- Preparing written materials to describe the results of technical evaluations, analyses, project cost estimating, and reviews performed.
- Coordinating project-specific plans and studies as well as special transportation program activities within the department and with other county, state, and federal agencies, consultants, elected officials, and citizens.
- Reviewing traffic studies submitted to the county on transportation facility design plans.
- Reviewing and overseeing environmental studies for transportation projects.
- Performing traffic safety analysis and reviews and analyzes accident data, using traffic engineering and planning software for analysis and simulation of roadway capacity and level of service.
- Preparing technical reports, correspondence, board items, status reports, meeting summaries, and other written materials and makes presentations as needed to describe the results of technical evaluations, analyses, and reviews performed.
- Performing project management duties requiring a high degree of competence in both technical and administrative aspects, including highly complex, public-private partnership projects and other capital improvement projects; monitoring project grant requirements when applicable.

- Experience in project management.
- Experience with local and state governments, boards, commissions, authorities and transportation agencies.

- Ability to analyze transportation and policy issues at the state or federal level.
- Ability to identify work-flow issues and develop solutions.
- Strong analytical, verbal and writing skills.
- Professional Engineer (PE) license a plus.
