Job Announcement
The Utilities Design and Construction Division (UDCD), in Capital Facilities (CAP), Fairfax County is seeking for Survey Party Chiefs who will be directly responsible in the completion of various types of field surveys such as design, geodetic, construction, property, and as-built. Supervises, trains, and plans the daily work of the survey field party. Performs the more complex and technical assignments in the field or office and does related work as required. Must instruct the field party to ensure safety and efficiency of work. May work in the office as analyst for extended periods as required. Collects and records field data, interprets data for design and construction surveys, prepares field collected data for further use in AutoCAD and prepares cut-sheets for construction stakeout. Operates various surveying instruments including the total station, GPS units, data collectors, and level to establish and re-establish line for surveys. Computes angles and performs trigonometric computations using calculating devices and data collectors.
Requires knowledge of the basic principles of civil engineering specifically relating to hydrology and construction processes. It also requires basic knowledge of applicable County, State and Federal laws, codes, and regulations.

Employment Standards
MINIMUM QUALIFICATIONS:
Any combination of education, experience and training equivalent to high school graduation or a GED issued by a state department of education; plus three years of nonprofessional survey field work, including two years of work equivalent to the Survey Instrument Technician level.
CERTIFICATES AND LICENSES REQUIRED:
Possession of a valid motor vehicle driver's license.
NECESSARY SPECIAL REQUIREMENTS:
The appointee to this position will be required to complete a criminal background check and driving record check to the satisfaction of the employer.
PREFERRED QUALIFICATIONS:
PHYSICAL REQUIREMENTS:
Ability to physically maneuver around wooded areas, construction sites, uneven terrain, access structures, ascend/descend slopes, climb fencing, cross creeks, or creek beds. Ability to endure variable and extreme weather conditions, possible exposure to snakes, insects, and poisonous plants. Ability to measure, handle supplies, pull manhole covers with hook, operate tools such as machete and bush-hook to clear underbrush, and use a shovel.
Ability to lift and carry 75 pounds over uneven natural terrain and over rough project sites including traversing up and down steep slopes. This position requires the ability to perform physical labor, position equipment as directed and drive stakes and other marking material (using a mallet or sledgehammer) for construction purposes. Specific vision abilities required by this job include reading vision, ability to adjust focus, distinguish shapes, sizes, distance, and colors. Hearing acuity necessary for safety and communication in noisy roadway work zones and construction sites. Ability to read, understand, and produce written and typed documents proficiently. Ability to use computers/computer software for communication, report generation, electronic file-keeping, project metrics analysis, and project tracking purposes. All duties performed with or without reasonable accommodations.

- 2 years of experience as a Party Chief which includes proven track record of supervision/team lead responsibilities of survey crew.
- Graduation from Surveying Apprenticeship Classroom Education Program.
- 2 years of experience with use of all current field equipment, including total stations, data collectors, and Trimble GPS equipment.
- Extensive knowledge of advance mathematics especially trigonometric computations
- Extensive knowledge of the basic principles of civil engineering specifically relating to hydrology and construction processes.
- Oral and written communications skills and experience with both public and internal presentations to various audiences.
- Proven experience in collaboration and teambuilding with various groups.
- Information technology skills including use of Microsoft Office Word and Excel, and basic proficiency in AutoCAD and GIS.
