Summary
The incumbent will support the organization on analysis of program development activities, working
groups that consist of FAA staff members, and may include representatives of domestic and
international organizations, manufacturers, employee groups, air traffic organizations, and others
in the worldwide aviation community.
Duties
Serves as an Operational Safety Analyst and performs a mixture of basic and routine, but progressively more difficult assignments under the close direction of a manager, project/program manager, team leader, or more experienced technical specialist. Applies basic aviation technical knowledge to accomplish assignments as an individual contributor and/or member of a team. Typical assignments may include collecting and analyzing data/information, identify problems, and perform investigation and inspection activities. Duties also include analytical and/or advisory work to assure understanding of and compliance with Federal laws, regulations and other mandatory guidelines.
Coordinates with a manager, project/program manager, team leader or more experienced technical specialist to plan time and use assigned resources to accomplish assignments. Supports analysis and coordination with the FAA in support of AIR safety initiatives. These activities include assisting with information management, data gathering, and research and analysis. Established policies/procedures provide detailed guidance for almost all assignments, with little or no room for discretion. Works under detailed instructions provided by a manager, project/program manager, team leader or more experienced technical specialist.
Contacts are primarily internal to the organizational unit with a manager and other employees to share information, provide data and/or written analyses, and to discuss the status of assignments. May have regular contact with customers and/or external organizations. Provides and follows up on routine requests for information, both from external and internal customers. Participates as a team member in aviation safety programs. Assists in the policy analysis and privatization studies designed to improve the safety performance of the U.S. aviation transportation system.
Regularly refers problems and work issues to a manager, project/program manager, team leader or more experienced technical specialist when existing guidelines are not available or applicable. Work will be reviewed frequently during assignments, and at completion, for all aspects of quality. Work activities typically support the work of other employees and contribute to activities of the organizational unit.

Qualifications
To qualify for this position you must demonstrate in your application that you possess at least one year (52 weeks) of specialized experience equivalent to the next lower grade level (FG/GS-8) that is typically in or related to the line of work of the position to be filled and which has equipped the applicant with the particular knowledge, skills, and abilities to successfully perform in this position. To be creditable, specialized experience must have been at least equivalent to the next lower level in the normal line of progression for the occupation in the organization.
Specialized experience includes Demonstrated accomplishment in computer skills and knowledge of common software applications; analytical skills; interpersonal skills; and communication skills; experience in gathering and compiling aviation safety data; experience in analyzing aviation safety information for the purpose of identifying trends; experience in preparing technical reports and documents. Typically, preferred candidates will show technical training and/or certification experience applicable to a regulatory aviation environment.
