Plans, coordinates and directs the design and construction of capital renewal, improvement and repair for structural systems and general building design for projects in occupied spaces including single story, multi-story, and critical infrastructure buildings and parking garages. Projects include but are not limited to forensic investigations (storm related damage, vehicle related damage, structural assessments, settling concerns, office reconfigurations, roof replacements, solar PV, structural member issues as well as, capital renewal projects.
Performs review and analysis of plans and specifications. Serves as department subject matter expert and subject matter expert to multiple other county departments and agencies. As a registered Structural Professional Engineer, leverages a strong technical background, excellence in design, attention to detail and quality control to perform forensic investigations, prepare reports, perform field inspections, structural assessments, complete design calculations, prepare and review conceptual, preliminary, and detailed design, drawings, specifications, schedules and budgets.
Knowledge of and strong skills in the use of computer applications and software (such as CAD) associated with the preparation of plans and engineering computations. Strong knowledge of and skills using computer software (such as Project, Excel, construction management) associated with project and budget management. This position is a Team Lead and may be responsible for supervising construction project managers, as well as, providing support to other Department teams. This position is responsible for managing multiple contractors and projects throughout the entire life of the project as well as communicating with end users to coordinate project construction and manage expectations. Ability to produce work in AutoCAD and perform system calculations and analysis is a must. Signs off on the work of subordinate employees and signs off on own work as a Professional Structural Engineer. Performs related duties as required. Duties are performed under general guidance of the Assistant Director, Planning, Engineering and Energy, Facilities Management Department. This position is designated an "Essential Employee." Night and weekend work hours may be required.

MINIMUM QUALIFICATIONS:
Any combination of education, experience, and training equivalent to the following: (Click on the aforementioned link to learn how Fairfax County interprets equivalencies for “Any combination, experience, and training equivalent to”) Graduation from a four-year college or university accredited by the Accreditation Board of Engineering and Technologies with a bachelor's degree in the appropriate engineering or architectural field; plus, five years of progressively responsible professional experience in the appropriate engineering field.
CERTIFICATES AND LICENSES REQUIRED:
NECESSARY SPECIAL REQUIREMENTS:
The appointee to this position will be required to complete a criminal background and driving record check to the satisfaction of the employer.

Must be able to access facility equipment and equipment rooms. Must be able to communicate by phone. Must be mobile to access active construction sites. Ability to climb ladders, access tight spaces, crawl, reach, lift 25 lbs, push 25lbs, etc. Dexterity to use hand tools. Vision to see detail drawings, construction and discern color. Must drive a motor vehicle. Must communicate with others verbally and in writing. All duties performed with or without reasonable accommodations.

- Three or more years of experience assessing and evaluating commercial building (1 story and multiple story - minimum of 10 story buildings) structural failures to include authoring, recommending, and designing remediation.
