Job Description

The School Nutrition Service Coordinator assists the Director of the School Nutrition Services to meet the needs of all general and nutrition related needs for the district. Requirements for the position include, but are not limited to the maintenance of Registration as a Dietitian recognized by the Academy of Nutrition and Dietetics, menu development, ACPS strategic plan as it relates to nutrition and wellness throughout the district, nutritional analysis, nutrition education, marketing, special diets, employee development and training, maintaining community partnerships, act as preceptor for Dietetic Interns, complying with mandated health standards, and assume additional roles within the Dept. as assigned and as needed.

Qualifications

Education: Bachelor's Degree in Nutrition, Food Management, Dietetics, or related field.

Certificates & Licenses: Registered Dietitian. SNA certification and/or SNS credentials preferred. Serve Safe Certified.

Experience: Job related experience is required. Ability to maintain good working relationships with administration, staff and students in a team environment. Proven ability to develop and teach nutrition education programs to children and adults. Demonstrated knowledge of computer skills including nutritional analysis/menu software and MS Office.

Essential Functions
  • Develops, implements, and maintains menu planning and nutrition analysis software and costing for all meal programs.
  • Must have an excellent understanding of all regulations pertaining to the federal meal patterns for all programs SNS programs operating throughout the district and community.
  • Maintains current nutrition information on all food items.
  • Helps develop and maintain a master food item.
  • Helps develop and maintain a master recipe file.
  • Assists in developing menus for all grade levels according to USDA regulations and utilizing available commodities.
  • Develops, assigns, and publishes Menu Cycles in SNS software program
  • Develops production plans for all menu cycles in SNS software program
  • Completes nutrition analyses on all menus and make recommendations for improvement.
  • Develops, tests, and evaluates new recipes. Conducts taste testing and engages customer feedback for new products.
  • Actively researches nutritive food options to include in meal programs
  • Actively communicates and meets with vendors for procuring new products
  • Maintains and updates Master Bid for Prime Vendor annual procurement
  • Incorporates the new food and packaging items into the menu and on the food bids.
  • Assists with commercial and commodity food purchasing and inventories for the district and at the school level.
  • Assess equipment needs for small equipment as well as new construction projects based on projected menu cycles and makes recommendations accordingly
  • Works closely with Early Childhood Programing to establish equipment and diet needs for age specific meal planning.
  • Develops and maintains allergy information on all food items and recipes and makes information available on Division website and to respective departments throughout the Division.
  • Manages, designs, and implements medically necessary diets for students with identified and documented medical conditions.
  • Handles parent and/or nurse requests for special diets, nutrition and/or allergy information requests. Meets with parents and/or students as needed.
  • Manages and responds to Parent and Community Feedback
  • Assists the SNS technology personnel with the development of nutrition education program to help students make wise choices when eating in their school cafeterias.
  • Provides guidance to SNS technology personnel with the implementation of online meal ordering processes and publishing of menus on SchoolCafe
  • Assists SNS IT Coordinator with social media campaign as related to nutrition/nutrition education messaging.
  • Actively communicates with Community Nutrition Partners on current campaigns (i.e. Childhood Youth Initiative, Hunger Free Alexandria)
  • Assists School Nutrition managers in marketing their school nutrition program, and incorporates nutrition education themes when applicable, into their cafeterias.
  • Oversees the planning of special nutrition related menus/events for NSBW, NSLW and National Nutrition Month.
  • Provides group nutrition education for the Division including school community groups such as PTA and employee groups, school health fairs and career days.
  • Writes articles on nutrition for department or district newsletters. Writes articles for local newspapers, as needed.
  • Actively participates in Grant Program Management
  • Coordinates and distributes recipes, cooking supplies, and meal ingredients for Annual Title IV Grant Parent Cooking Classes in coordination with VA Cooperative Extension Program
  • Oversees Annual Dairy Grant Programs
  • Interprets current scientific information on food, nutrition, diet, and health to Division professionals, parents, agencies, and the public.
  • Coordinates the printing and publication of school calendar menu as directed.
  • Serves on the Division Wellness Committee and/or Food Safety Council as directed.
  • Works with the Division in establishing some nutrition/diet related employee wellness programs.
  • Conducts certification and manager training sessions for new hires and as needed.
  • Completes and revises HACCP/SOP Handbook to maintain compliancy with Alexandria Health Department.
  • Revises and utilizes the New Employee Training Handbook as needed.
  • Participates in Interview Process for School Nutrition Managers and Staff
  • Aids in training of new Executive Chef and Field Operations Supervisors
  • Plans, implements, and oversees the education of Didactic intern rotations annually
  • Attends all managers' meetings, making Director aware when there is a need to be included on agenda.
  • Develops training materials i.e. ELL pictorial tools and conducts nutrition, HACCP Food Safety/Sanitary training. Also, assists SNS Supervisor with the training of all meal patterns guidelines for the different meal programs.
  • Participates in professional development activities that enhance personal growth.
  • Performs other duties as required or assigned.

Physical Requirements/Environmental Conditions
  • Light physical activity performing non-strenuous daily activities of administrative nature. • Training personnel: Requires moderate physical activity performing somewhat strenuous activities of primarily product/technical nature.
  • Requires physical exertion to manually move, lift (to 40+ lbs.), carry, pull or push heavy objects or materials. • Experience prolonged standing and working near and around moving mechanical parts. • Must work in a moderate noise environment, with computers, printers, and light traffic. • Air contaminates such as dust, fumes, and/or disagreeable odors.

Clearances:
  • Criminal Justice Fingerprint/Background Clearance.
  • Tuberculosis Skin Test.

Public Health Compliance
  • Proof of COVID vaccination. Exemptions for religious/medical will be reviewed.
  • Must follow safety and health protocols.
