MARKETING & EVENTS INTERN

An Overview

The Old Town Farmers' Market is the oldest farmers' market in the country continuously held on the same site. During the peak season, there are more than 70 permanent vendors at the Old Town Farmers' Market offering fresh fruits and vegetables, meat, poultry, cheeses, breads, pastries, cut flowers, jewelry and art. The Marketing & Events intern will assist in the development, organization and implementation of a marketing plan to promote the Old Town Farmers’ Market including event planning to grow and improve customer awareness and attendance, increase market vendor revenue generation and enhance brand awareness for the City of Alexandria Old Town Farmers' Market. This position will have direct responsibilities with event planning, marketing, website and social media management.

What You Should Bring

The ideal candidate should be a undergraduate or graduate level student currently enrolled in at least twelve (12) semester units at an accredited college or university, majoring in a field of study closely related to the current job announcement . Students with experience in events management and/or marketing preferred. Applicants with a general understanding of government and/or nonprofit organizations is preferred.

The Opportunity - Examples of Work
  • Develop a marketing plan to help promote the Old Town Farmers’ Market including related events and entertainment
  • Develop signage, flyers, correspondence and other print materials such as program booklets, e-mail newsletter, and advertisements
  • Provide support in planning and executing events
  • Help to grow and manage the Market’s social media presence and engagement to increase visibility and awareness
  • Create and incorporate content for the Farmers’ Market events calendar to help promote events, promotions, artisans, entertainers and community involvement
  • Performs related work as required.

Minimum & Additional Requirements

Student pursuing an Associates, Bachelors or Masters degree. Excellent written, oral communication and presentation skills required. Ability to handle multiple assignments, manage strict timelines and adhere to deadlines; and strong organizational skills. Outstanding attention to detail; ability to operate independently and in a team environment with little supervision. MS Office suite experience preferred, including proficiency in Microsoft Word, Excel, PowerPoint, and social media including Facebook and Twitter. Prior internship or professional experience in public relations, social media, marketing, customer service and event planning a plus. Passion for farmers’ markets and local economic development and sustainability a plus but not required. Applicants must be able to commit to a minimum of three (3) months, 25 hours per week and willing and able to work a minimum of two (2) Saturday mornings per month.
