Camp Peary-Armed Forces Experimental Training Activity (AFETA) in Williamsburg, VA, is hiring multiple federal Firefighter/Medics.  Responsibilities include the mitigation of all hazards performed through extinguishing fires, performing rescue and salvage operations, and providing Advanced Life Support.  There are also opportunities in technical rescue and maritime/dive operations.  Employees work a 144-hour bi-weekly schedule.

 This position requires a maximum entry age for an initial appointment; applicants cannot have reached their 37th birthday by the date of appointment.  Applicants who have passed the designated entry age limit but who have previously served as a federal employee in a covered position may be eligible to re-enter the fire service provided that they (1) meet all applicable qualifications for the position and (2) will be able to complete 20 years of covered and creditable federal fire service by the time the firefighter reaches the age of 57.

 Applicants must be U.S. citizens (dual U.S. citizens are also eligible), at least 21 years of age, with a valid driver's license and must complete an extensive background investigation.

 Required Qualifications/Certifications

  • 3 years as an active member of a local, state or federal fire department/rescue squad (may include career, volunteer and/or part-time service).
  • Knowledge of building construction, strong interpersonal, computer and writing skills.
  • Firefighter Level I and II (NFPA 1001); Hazardous Materials Operations Level Certification (NFPA 472); Driver Pump Operator (DPO); Emergency Vehicle Operations Course (NFPA 1002); Advanced Life Support provider (A, I or P).  Out-of-state certification must be recognized by the IFSAC or PRO Board.  EMS certifications must be recognized by the Va. Office of EMS.

Desired Qualifications/Certifications

  • Successful completion of an Accredited Fire Academy; Nationally Registered EMT-Paramedic; Aircraft Rescue Fire Fighting (ARFF) certification; Fire Inspector I & II (1031); Driver Aerial Operator (DAO).
