Part-Time Cook
The City of Alexandria is located in northern Virginia and is bordered by the District of Columbia (Potomac River), Arlington and Fairfax counties. An Overview
This position will report to our Alexandria Community Shelter facility. The Cook is responsible for preparing and serving meals up to 65 clients & residents, 365 days a year. Assist with inventory control and maintenance of the kitchen and equipment in accordance with DCHS and the State health department standards. The Cook fills in as necessary and scheduled.
What You Should Bring
The ideal candidate should have some knowledge of acceptable food preparation methods; some knowledge of the principles of sanitation and safety in food service operations; ability to interpret and follow written and oral instructions; ability to lift and maneuver heavy objects, equipment and supplies.

The Center for Adult Services (CAS) provides programs and services in Aging; Adult Protective Services; Clinical & Emergency Services; and Community & Residential Support Services for seniors and for persons with mental illness, intellectual disabilities and substance use disorders. CAS provides compassionate and effective person-centered services based on best practices. Our teams support self-determination, safety and recovery for Alexandria residents affected by abuse, neglect, mental illness, intellectual disabilities and substance abuse disorders.
Minimum & Additional Requirements
Some experience in food preparation as a cook, and completion of high school-level courses in arithmetic and English; or any equivalent combination of experience and training which provides the required knowledge, skills and abilities. Possession of a valid certificate in food service sanitation as required by the City of Alexandria, and successful completion of a City medical examination prior to the date of appointment.
Preferred Qualifications
Bilingual (English-Spanish) skills. Five or more years of experience in institutional cooking.
Two of the last five years providing cook services in large cafeteria settings. ServSafe Certified.

This position requires the successful completion of pre-employment checks to include: Criminal Record Check; VA State Child Abuse/Neglect Registry; Medical/Fitness for Duty/Drug Testing; Medicare/Medicaid Fraud Database; Driver's License from state of residence and education/certifications.
Schedule:
Thursday, Saturday & Sunday, 7:00AM - 6:30PM; and Friday, 11:00AM - 6:30PM / Scheduled shift will be within these hours and require flexibility.

The Opportunity
- Prepares meals for up to 160 consumers & residents per day;
- Cooks lunch and dinner according to planned menus & recipes;
- Uses accepted methods of food preparation, equipment maintenance, sanitation and safety practices;
- Maintains inventory in refrigerator, freezer, storage cabinets, and shelves in an orderly manner;
- Labels and discards foods after expiration date;
- Performs inventory control and supply usage records;
- Coordinates with verifying deliveries and in properly storing food and supplies;
- Assists with preparation of food ordered on catering requests;
- Slices meat using a meat slicer;
- Substitutes menu items with other food containing similar nutritional values;
- Cleans ovens, range and dish machine hoods, steam table, cold table, and refrigerator, freezer, cabinets, and shelves, counter tops, underneath counters, walls and floors;
- Attends staff meetings;
- Keeps department required trainings up to date.
- Performs other duties as assigned.
