Job Description

The Washington Post is seeking an innovative, insightful and dynamic journalist to take on a new leadership position as audience strategy editor for Features, with a focus on Style, entertainment, arts and breaking news coverage.

The successful candidate will help accelerate experimental thinking and chart the trajectory of our coverage of these subjects by developing strategies that place the needs of our audience at the center of our journalism. Tapping all audience disciplines - including tactics for reaching new readers, building loyalty, and capitalizing on social and search, newsletters and alerts - this person will help guide decisions about what gets covered and how, as well as how to think about opportunities for staff and audience growth.

The ideal candidate will be a newsroom leader who has a demonstrated ability to produce journalism that meets the needs of various audiences. This candidate should have experience collaborating with multiple teams to launch products aimed at developing new audiences and a clear point of view on story form, use of voice, effective visual journalism, and how to elevate strong and appealing story targets.

The audience strategy editor will also be responsible for training editors and reporters on engaging audiences, including but not limited to optimization, recirculation strategy and headline writing.

Strong candidates will have five or more years of newsroom experience, including in the use of audience analytics. Management experience is preferred, as is a feel for the subjects covered by the Features team.

This position is based in our Washington newsroom.

Candidates should upload a résumé and a cover letter that articulates how they would approach the role to our jobs portal. All application materials can be uploaded to the same field. Applications will be reviewed on a rolling basis until the position is filled, but those received by 04/26/2023 will be prioritized. Cover letters should be addressed to Executive Features Editor Ben Williams, Deputy Features Editor Mitch Rubin, Head of Audience Strategy and Growth Erika Allen and Managing Editor Krissah Thompson.
