Job Announcement

Leads and collaborates in the development and documentation of designs for a wide variety of projects for a portfolio of over 240 Fairfax County Government owned and leased buildings/spaces. Most assigned projects will be for the performance of interior space planning and fit-out as well as feasibility studies. Responsible for the complete development of documents associated with full performance space planning and minor renovation studies, designs, and tasks. Works under the guidance and general direction of an Architect/Engineer IV and Assistant Director for Design, Engineering and Construction.

Specific duties include:

  • Completes site surveys, field verification, and test-fit plans.
  • Prepares designs, plans, specifications and estimates for various end users and building/program uses.
  • Coordinates and collaborates with team members in multiple disciplines/trades to maintain project schedule and design quality through all phases of small to large and complex projects.
  • Uses advanced design and planning concepts and objectives to resolve complex issues and provide expertise.
  • Provides analyses related to proposed studies, design projects, and space moves/renovations to ensure overall county objectives are met.
  • Develops design programs, feasibility programs, concept layouts and other planning materials.
  • Manages and performs the development of the design from initial concept through to construction administration and construction ensuring that the design intent is consistent and properly executed, all local, state and national codes and program licensing requirements are met, and design meets established energy and sustainability requirements.
  • Prepares project design and construction scope of work for issuance to third party firms and contractors.
  • Day-to-day use of AutoCAD, SketchUp, RS Means, Bluebeam, MS Office Suite for performance of duties.

Employment Standards

MINIMUM QUALIFICATIONS:
Any combination of education, experience, and training equivalent to the following:

Graduation from a four-year college or university accredited by the Accreditation Board of Engineering and Technologies with a bachelor's degree in the appropriate engineering or architectural field; plus four years of progressively responsible professional experience in the appropriate engineering field.

CERTIFICATES AND LICENSES REQUIRED:
Valid driver's license.

PREFERRED QUALIFICATIONS:
  • Graduation from a four-year college or university accredited by the Accreditation Board of Engineering and Technologies with a bachelor's degree in Architecture.
  • Four years of demonstrated history directly responsible and accountable for management and supervision of full performance commercial space planning and minor renovation study, design. and construction projects in occupied commercial buildings greater than 70,000 gross sq ft., per building to include low rise and high rise (5 stories or more) buildings with individual project budgets over $100,000 involving multiple trades.
  • Four or more years of demonstrated history in interpreting and applying building codes and regulations.
  • Proficient in reading building architectural and engineering plans.
  • Four or more years demonstrated history in the full performance responsibility for a portfolio of complex commercial building space planning and minor renovation projects in occupied commercial facilities including but not limited to: development of contracts, authoring scope of work, financial oversight, design development, submittal approval, RFI responses, construction quality, safety performance, oversight of quality metrics and quality performance, firm/contractor selection and oversight, oversight of project documentation, project schedule, and risk mitigation and quality control.

NECESESARY SPECIAL REQUIREMENTS:
The appointee to the position must satisfactorily complete a criminal background check and driving record check.

This position is considered "essential personnel" and will be required to report to work during times designated countywide as approved for unscheduled leave regardless of the emergency situation (i.e., weather, transportation, other disaster).

PHYSICAL REQUIREMENTS:
Access facility equipment and equipment rooms. Mobile to access active construction sites. Wear personal safety equipment to include safety shoes, ear protection, safety glasses, and hardhat. Ability to climb ladders, access tight spaces, crawl, reach, lift 25 pounds, push 25 pounds, etc. Dexterity to use hand tools Vision to see detail drawings, construction and discern color. Ability to drive a motor vehicle. Communicate with others verbally and in writing. All duties performed with or without reasonable accommodations.
