Job Announcement

Performs complex tasks to inspect, operate, test, and perform preventive, predictive, corrective, and demand maintenance and repairs on generator systems and life safety equipment, and components in accordance with established procedures, manufacture, and Code requirements. Troubleshoot, problem-solve, diagnose and repair failed generator systems i.e., identify problems, replace failed equipment and/or components, and test systems to ensure proper functionality, performance, and readiness.

Inspects, tests, troubleshoots, maintains and repairs generator and system components such as alternators, speed controls, regulators, wiring harnesses safety devices, shutdown devices, 12- and 24-volt battery systems, cooling systems, fuel systems including day tanks, block heaters, PLC controls, load banks, quick connects, and other generator components. Diagnoses and repairs emergency generators and ATS switches. Generators are of varying sizes up to 1.5meg, 480volt. Work to be performed on systems that have natural gas and/or diesel engines and may be interconnected with solar panels. Generator systems may be permanent in place or temporary/portable.

Service Cummins, Detroit Diesel, John Deere, Caterpillar, Katolight, and MTU engines. Enforces local, state, and national fire, electrical, and building codes. Performs related duties as required; duties are performed under general supervision.

Note: This position is considered essential personnel and maybe subject to callback and overtime.

MINIMUM QUALIFICATIONS:

Any combination of education, experience, and training equivalent to the following: high school graduation or a GED issued by a state department of education; plus, completion of an apprentice-level vocational training program in electronics; and two years of experience in the maintenance and repair of the electronic and electromechanical equipment specific to the position.

CERTIFICATES AND LICENSES REQUIRED:

Motor vehicle operator's license.

NECESSARY SPECIAL REQUIREMENTS:
The appointee to this position will be required to complete a criminal background check, driving record check, and a pre-employment physical examination to the satisfaction of the employer.

PREFERRED QUALIFICATIONS:
  • NFPA (National Fire Prevention Association) Certified Emergency Power Systems Specialist (CEPSS) or EGSA (Electrical Generating System Association) certified in diesel engine repair and maintenance.
  • Valid Sate of Virginia Master Electrician (MELE) License
  • Five or more years’ experience operating, maintaining, troubleshooting and repairing critical commercial building life safety and other building generators systems up to 1.5meg.

PHYSICAL REQUIREMENTS:
Must be able to climb and descend ladders up to 50 feet and work in physically fatiguing positions for long periods of time. Ability to ascend and descend stairs, ramps, and the like for single and multistory (up to 12 stories) buildings in the Department’s portfolio. ability to lift up to 75 lbs. For short periods of time. Carrying up to 60lbs. Seizing, holding, grasping, turning, or otherwise working with hand(s). Reach with hands and arms. Pushing/pulling involving use of hands/arms, feet/legs, and/or feet only done with one side of the body or both sides. Moving about on hands and knees or hands and feet to enter tight spaces. Stand, walk, climb, balance, stoop, kneel, crouch and crawl. Specific vision abilities required by this job include close vision, distance vision, color vision, peripheral vision, depth perception, and the ability to adjust focus. Must be able to wear and use respirator and OSHA required PPE. Work in various weather conditions (heat, rain, snow, high humidity, etc.). Frequently work near moving parts. All duties performed with or without reasonable accommodations.
