Director, User Experience Design
Canada Remote Worker
The Emmes Company, LLC ("Emmes") is a global, full-service Clinical Research Organization dedicated to excellence in supporting the advancement of public health and biopharmaceutical innovation. We believe in the power of truth, so much so that we named our company Emmes, which means truth. Through decades of experience we have learned that collaborative relationships thrive and human health benefits when truth is our compass.
Our "Character Achieves Results" culture is driven by five key values that guide our actions in the way we conduct research and distinguish us as an organization: Integrity, Agility, Passion for Excellence, Collaborative Partnerships and Intellectual Curiosity. We are a trusted partner to clients who share our passion for improving public health in a world of ever-changing scientific research.
If you share our motivations and passion in research, come join us! You will be joining a collaborative culture that empowers every Emmes employee — from entry level through top executive — to contribute to our clients' success by sharing ideas openly and honestly.
Primary Purpose
The Director, UX Design is a hands-on user experience (UX) role that uses both user research and interaction design skills to shape the direction of web and mobile experiences while leading and coaching a team of UX Designers. This position is the head of design for all our software products in the clinical trials space including our flagship Advantage technology platform which houses over 1,100 clinical studies. As a UX leader, you will provide UX expertise across the organization, help inform priorities and roadmaps, and influence ways of working. The team is growing, as such the right candidate is someone who can excel both as an individual contributor and as a leader.
Responsibilities
• Oversees the creation and implementation of a consistent and coherent strategy for UX design and across all software development teams.
• Collaborates with Product Managers, Engineers, and other team members to design user experiences.
• Contributes to early-stage discovery and product definition by developing an understanding and definition of users, framing the problem,
generating design principles, developing concepts and models, and evaluating current state experiences.
• Conducts user research and secondary research to inform and evaluate experiences.
• Translates requirements and user needs into tangible interaction designs through detailed user flows and wire frames.
• Communicates design decisions, rationale, and direction through presentations and other documentation.
• Contributes to the development of interaction patterns and promotes the use of our design system.
• Utilizes best practice UX design methods and provides expert-level guidance for UX design initiatives.
Experience
• Bachelor's degree and formal education in Human Centered Design, Design Methods, Human-Computer Interaction (HCI) or a related field required.
• 5+ years of design experience working on an Agile product team
• 3+ years of experience leading a UX team.
• An understanding of design, usability, and research best practices.
• Experience flexing between design strategy and planning and design execution.
• Experience designing complex, data-intensive applications.
• Experience designing for mobile devices.
• Experience contributing to a pattern library or design system.
• Proficiency in common wireframing tools.
• Experience with how to use data and metrics to inform designs.
• Work samples that show how you broke down complexity, empathized with the user, and balanced user needs, business needs, and technical considerations.
• Strong written, verbal, and presentation skills.
• Ability to work independently, in a team environment, and as a mentor.
