Access Services Specialist, Mason Square LibraryThe George Mason University Libraries seek to fill the position of the MSL Access Services Specialist. About the Department:The mission of the Mason Square Library, within the University Libraries, is to support the research, education and life-long learning needs of the faculty, staff, students, and community patrons through the use of library resources, technology, facilities and staff expertise.About the Position:This position oversees circulation operations during evening and weekend hours at Mason Square Library, including administrative activities, interpreting and enforcing University and Libraries' policies and procedures, and monitoring student workers.Responsibilities:Provide oversight for the Library's circulating and non-circulating collections;Responsible for the overall maintenance and management of all Mason Square Library (MSL) stacks areas which includes serials maintenance, preservation inspections, collection shifts, and space planning;Creating and updating site-specific marketing materials and social media;Participates in Libraries' and departmental-wide projects and tasks; andTravel to other Mason campuses and work with other Mason Libraries' units as needed or necessary.Required Qualifications:The following education and/or skill sets are required:Bachelor's degree or significant equivalent library experience (typically 2+ years);Library public services experience, particularly in circulation services;Knowledge of and experience with academic library functions, including current library systems and research resources;Experience using an integrated library system, office productivity software, and computer equipment and software;Service-oriented and ability to work both independently and as part of a team in a fast-paced, production- and service-oriented environment;Dependability and punctuality;Ability to identify and modify work priorities as needed or directed;Ability to act with tact and diplomacy, interpret and explain, negotiate fairly and rationally, and exercise sound judgment under pressure or in potentially challenging situations;Physical ability to bend and reach overhead, to grasp and move library materials, to move and unpack packages and bins (up to 40 pounds), and to push loaded book trucks;Aptitude for accurate and detail-oriented work;Effective interpersonal and communication skills (written and oral) for providing customer service in a diverse, academic environment; andWell-developed analytical skills and problem-solving skills, including initiative and follow-through.Preferred Qualifications:The following education and/or skill sets are preferred:Academic library experience, preferably in circulation;Knowledge of stacks maintenance; andDemonstrated ability to supervise.
