Systems/Product Designer, OMNI

At Capital One, we're building a leading information-based technology company. Still founder-led by Chairman and Chief Executive Officer Richard Fairbank, Capital One is on a mission to help our customers succeed by bringing ingenuity, simplicity, and humanity to banking. We measure our efforts by the success our customers enjoy and the advocacy they exhibit. We are succeeding because they are succeeding.

Guided by our shared values, we thrive in an environment where collaboration and openness are valued. We believe that innovation is powered by perspective and that teamwork and respect for each other lead to superior results. We elevate each other and obsess about doing the right thing. Our associates serve with humility and a deep respect for their responsibility in helping our customers achieve their goals and realize their dreams. Together, we are on a quest to change banking for good.

Who we are:

Commercial banking is ripe for innovation. Internal systems could benefit from greater efficiency and collaboration and in the long-term, from artificial intelligence. Externally there are very few digital touchpoints for commercial banking clients so there's extensive opportunity for design to improve industry practices. The services and processes are complex so we're looking for highly qualified designers who enjoy serious problem solving and creating simple, humane, ingenious solutions.

The Design team at Capital One is at the forefront of enriching our customers' digital and physical experiences. We champion a thriving environment of collaboration, authenticity and healthy critique, in which we honor diversity of thought, create a culture of belonging, and elevate one another. If you're an innovator and storyteller who embraces an environment where you can experiment, learn, and change banking for good, we would love to hear from you.

What we're looking for:

We are looking for a designer with a passion for system-level thinking and experience building design systems at scale.

As a systems designer on the design system team, you will work closely with other designers, strategists, developers, product managers, and business stakeholders to enable human-centered software design through the use of our design system. You'll bring proven experience in leading projects end-to-end, creating the approach, managing scope and ambiguous project boundaries. You understand what it takes to build something truly desirable for customers, viable for the business and operationally and technically feasible. You maintain empathy for customers at every level and feel comfortable advocating for user needs. You are curious and demonstrate a passion for learning. You take pride in your work, yet have a humble approach

Who you are:

  • Systems Thinker: You have a knack for stepping back and looking beyond the immediate problem to see how it fits into the larger ecosystem - across channels, touchpoints, and platforms - and then diving in to nail the important details.
  • Intrapreneur: You'll think about the team, the product, and the customer as parts of your own business; it needs a purpose - whether to solve a problem, entertain, educate, or delight -and you'll measure its performance against these goals. You don't wait for the next order to be issued. You seek opportunities and build the case for where the team needs to move next in order to bring the greatest impact.
  • Data-Driven: You are clear in articulation of intent and goals, and you know how to use data and research to back up your work. You'll seek out analytics and user testing data to help you make design decisions, support your design decisions, and iterate on your past design decisions - all so we constantly get better at getting better.
  • Facilitator: You are at your best when leading stakeholders and partners through brainstorming sessions, workshopping solutions in a truly collaborative fashion.

What you'll bring:

  • In-depth knowledge and experience with design systems and a desire to challenge the status quo and innovate
  • Deep expertise in design thinking/human-centered design
  • Proven end-to-end design skills - an ability leverage use cases and research best practices that will drive component and pattern decision making and ultimately deliver high-quality specifications and documentation for system additions and enhancements
  • Experience creating and documenting design tooling (via Figma libraries) including reusable components, patterns, and templates
  • A cross-disciplinary mindset and an ability to work directly with a development team to facilitate the building of components, patterns and templates
  • An educational mindset and desire to support system adopters through onboarding sessions, 1:1 troubleshooting, and ongoing training support

Basic Qualifications:

  • At least 2 years of experience with User Experience design
  • At least 2 years of experience working with a design system

Preferred Qualifications:

  • Master's degree in Design or Master's degree in Human-Computer Interaction
  • At least 2 years of experience working on a design system team
  • 5+ years of experience designing digital products, and 5+ years designing omni-channel services
  • 5 + years' experience with standard digital design tools (e.g. Figma, Sketch, Adobe Illustrator, Adobe Photoshop, Omnigraffle, Balsamiq, Axure, etc.)
