Job Announcement
The Fairfax County Department of Information Technology (DIT) is seeking an Institutional Network (I-Net) Fiber and Video Engineer II to join our Technology Infrastructure Division’s (TID) Enterprise Networking team. The County wide enterprise network is a large complex Metropolitan (MAN) and Wide area network (WAN) infrastructure that delivers secure transmission of data, video and voice communications over County fiber to 400+ regional locations. Under the general supervision of the Network Infrastructure Manager this Tier II engineer position supports the Enterprise Network Infrastructure team with an all-round understanding of the County’s Cable TV video and inside plant / outside plant (ISP/OSP) infrastructure.
Assists the Enterprise Network Team in evaluating products and processes for managing the I-Net fiber and TV video infrastructure. Provides infrastructure support and management that includes installation, configuration, maintenance and change management of the infrastructure and equipment. Acts as a technical specialist in fiber network design, troubleshooting and incident management. Works in coordination with team members across the county. The engineer resolves complex issues that involves management tools such as outside plant fiber mapping, monitoring, OTDR testing, optical power meters and spectrum analyzers.

MINIMUM QUALIFICATIONS:
Any combination of education, experience, and training equivalent to the following:

Possession of an associate degree in computer science, electrical engineering, electronics, or a related field; plus three years of network and/or telecommunications experience; or a bachelor's degree in such fields; plus one year of experience in network or telecommunications system design, analysis, installation, and troubleshooting.
CERTIFICATES AND LICENSES REQUIRED:
Valid driver's license.
NECESSARY SPECIAL REQUIREMENTS:
The appointee to this position will be required to complete a criminal background and driving record check to the satisfaction of the employer.
PREFERRED QUALIFICATIONS:
Experience with fiber optic cabling GIS based OSP mapping applications, splicing documenting, optical monitoring & testing. Experience with Cable TV video headend distribution, nodes and testing. Experience and knowledge of the various types of cabling and terminations.
PHYSICAL REQUIREMENTS:
Work is generally sedentary, performed in a normal office environment. Some lifting (up to 50 pounds) may be required. Ladder climbing is required. Driving is required. All duties performed with or without reasonable accommodations.

Responsibilities include:
- Serves as a front-line Infrastructure point of contact to Fairfax County Public Schools and other County agencies.
- Manages ISP/OSP projects for moves, adds and changes.
- Installs, configures, repairs, replaces, patches, upgrades, tests, manages version levels of the enterprise fiber optic and video network equipment
- Leads in the fiber network design & architecture
- Performs troubleshooting to isolate and diagnose problems. Performs technical support for incidents escalated. Escalates unresolved incidents to Tier IV or vendor assistance.
- Conducts a scheduled review of upgraded system firmware, application software, and IOS.
- Researches technologies and keep apprised of advancements in these fields
- Provides network availability, outages, and status reporting.
- Provides training and assistance to other support teams. Develops troubleshooting scripts and other procedural documentation that assists the teams in performing their duties.
- Leads in document network diagrams, inventory and changes.
- Complies with the county’s security and network architecture standards, policies and procedures.
- Lifting, climbing and driving are all activities required of this position.
- Participates in the on-call support rotation.
- Performs other duties as assigned.
