Job Description

The Washington Post is seeking a collaborative, experienced and creative editor to join our Next Generation audience initiative. This editor will lead our efforts to identify what stories, lines of coverage and formats are resonating with younger and more diverse audiences and partner with desks in the development of reporting and story forms aimed at these audiences.

This editor will work alongside editors across our newsroom to identify topics of interest - from climate change to elections to wellness and more - and develop coverage plans and new editorial products targeted to new audiences. They will identify existing Post journalism that resonates with next-generation audiences and collaborate with audience teams to bring even more visibility to that work. They will serve as a consultant and advocate for experimentation with access to all of The Post's storytelling tools, including video, photo, design, code, data, and on- and off-platform distribution. The ideal candidate thinks big but knows how to right-size ambitious projects into a daily news workflow.

This editor will also lead trainings and conversations to share knowledge about who our audiences are and what they need and want. They are expected to participate in news meetings and coverage conversations to make sure perspectives of target audiences are represented. This editor will work in tandem with editors across the newsroom to build and execute coverage plans. This editor will also manage a budget and work with staff and freelance writers, editors, and videographers.

Next Generation is an initiative at The Post to accelerate the acquisition of younger and more diverse audiences through new products, practices and partnerships. The Next Generation team works closely with reporters, editors, visual journalists, audience specialists, business-side leaders and technologists across The Post.

This position is based in our Washington newsroom and will report to the director of the Next Generation initiative.

Candidates should upload a résumé and cover letter to our jobs portal. All application materials can be uploaded to the same field. Applications will be reviewed on a rolling basis until the position is filled, but those received by 3/31/2023 will be prioritized. Your cover letter should be addressed to Director of Next Generation Audience Development Phoebe Connelly and Managing Editor Justin Bank.
