Job Description

The Speech Language Coordinator shall be responsible for facilitating innovative practices in the field of speech/language pathology in Alexandria City Public Schools. The Coordinator will make recommendations to the Executive Director of Specialized Instruction for program improvements based on current best practices in the field.

Qualifications

Education: Master's degree in Speech-Language Pathology; Administrative endorsement highly recommended.

Certificates & Licenses: Valid license issued by the Virginia Board of Audiology and Speech Language Pathology; Certificate of Clinical Competence from the American Speech Language and Hearing Association, additionally school administrator licensure preferred

Experience: 5-8 years of experience in the field of Speech Language Pathology in a public school or private setting; proven role in leadership position,.

Knowledge, Skills and Abilities: The Speech Language Coordinator shall have a broad knowledge base in the field of Speech Language Pathology and demonstrate knowledge and application of:
  • evidence-based practices in a school setting in the areas of assessment and intervention;
  • data collection procedures ;
  • analysis and interpretation of data for modification of assessment and/or intervention;
  • alternative assessment procedures for linguistically diverse learners;
  • standards-based IEP development;
  • response to intervention;
  • the selection and use of a variety of intervention models, including models for supporting students with communication needs in the general education setting.
  • current state and local regulations;
  • best practices, including the application of current research in speech language pathology in preschool and school-age students;
  • the basic principles and dynamics of effective interpersonal communication; recognize and be able to address the challenges to successful communication interactions (e.g., generational and/or gender differences and cultural/linguistic factors).
  • exceptional customer service and communication skills, sound judgment and appropriate problem solving and decision making abilities that take into consideration evidenced-based practice, the needs of students and families, and fiscal needs of the department.; and
  • Excellent organizational, communication, and interpersonal skills are necessary.

Essential Functions
  • Guide and support Speech Language Pathologists through dissemination of information, modeling instruction, and provide feedback with the goal of developing professional knowledge, skills, and expertise;
  • Coordinate the delivery of school speech/language services through regularly scheduled meetings with the Executive Director of Specialized Instruction;
  • Assign Speech Language Pathologists to schools and monitor caseloads; Serve as a member of the Specialized Instruction Leadership team and participate in any other assigned meetings as related to position;
  • Assist the Executive Director of Specialized Instruction in recruitment and selection of new Speech/Language Pathologists;
  • Plan and deliver professional learning to Speech Language Pathologists;
  • Maintain an up-dated inventory of materials, equipment, supplies and forms used by the Speech Language program;
  • Make budget recommendations to the Executive Director of Specialized Instruction;
  • Provide orientation and mentors to newly hired Speech Language Pathologists;
  • Plan and conduct monthly meetings of the Speech Language Pathologists; Conduct observations/evaluations of all SLPs in conjunction with building administrators;
  • Coordinate and design interventions for students who may require speech/language services prior to evaluation;
  • Conduct speech/language evaluations, as needed ;
  • Collaborate with SLPs, administrators, provide direct therapy to a select group of students and other staff on specific cases, as needed.

Clearances
  • Criminal Justice Fingerprint/Background Clearance.
  • Tuberculosis Skin Test.

Public Health Compliance
  • Proof of COVID vaccination. Exemptions for religious/medical will be reviewed.
  • Must follow safety and health protocols.
