The Data and Analytics organization drives strategic and operational decisions at The Washington Post.This highly visible department applies data, analytics, and research to support data informed decisions company-wideand is currently seeking a Director of Data Management.
We are hiring a hands-on engineering director and leader. As our Director of Data Management, you will report to the Vice President of Data and Analytics and will work in close collaboration with the central Data and Analytics Team and other departments like newsroom, marketing, product, engineering, advertising, and finance on a diverse range of products and projects that have a critical and strategic impact on all aspects of the company. You will manage teams of engineers that will architect, design, build and deploy state of the art data and analytics infrastructure that powers numerous products and services used by millions of users.

Responsibilities
- Lead multiple teams of data & analytics engineers that build, manage, and support enterprise data and analytics technology infrastructure, tools, and products.
- Inform and influence the overall Data & Analytics technology vision and drive the delivery and execution of the vision.
- Accelerate building and improving capabilities centered around data and analytics such as foundational data assets, data engineering pipelines, data platforms and data products, and analytics & decisioning technology
- Create awareness of risk management and accountability across the entire Washington Post organization to create ownership and compliance
- Build cross-functional relationships with Business product owners, data scientists, and analysts to understand product needs and delivery expectations.
- Guide the adoption of new products, platforms, and data assets to improve data informed operations across the organization
- Build & mentor analytical engineering teams that deliver performance solutions that drive customer and business outcomes.
- Established a product mindset and cross functional team structure to support the strategy and fast paced delivery of quality solutions.
- Direct product management for technology deliverables including planning, estimation, coordination, and execution.
- Define operational excellence in all areas including process management, resiliency, and quality to support organizational goals and to evolve our existing products and workflows.
- Oversee compliance reviews including partnering with Information security and privacy teams on policy content, creation, maintenance, and awareness to ensure our customer data is secure and protected from unauthorized access.
- Stay informed on strategic & emerging trends in the Data and Analytics world, lead proofs of concept and continuously drive innovation across the data and analytics teams.
- You'll govern the responsible and efficient application of technology resources by assessing opportunities for reusing existing solutions, clearly defining minimum viable products, and always building with extensibility in mind

Requirements
Minimum Qualifications
- Bachelor's degree in STEM (Science, Technology, Engineering, Mathematics)
- 10+ years of experience in software engineering, data management or relevant technical experience.
- 4+ years of management experience.
- 5+ years of experience in Agile product management
- 5+ years of experience translating business strategy and analysis into consumer facing digital products
- Exceptional written and oral communication skills with users
- Practical experience implementing data protection, data governance programs and policies and privacy regulations like GDPR, CCPA and other laws.
Preferred Qualifications
- Expertise with relational and NoSQL databases and big data systems (Hadoop, Redshift)
- Experience architecting and implementing scalable SaaS or Cloud-based applications.
- Understanding and experience with key platform technologies including APIs & Management, Platform Services, Streaming Systems, Stream Processing, and Persistent Storage for Analytics and Applications
- Practical experience deploying applications and implementing continuous-integration tools and patterns.
- Experience guiding teams on DevOps, analyzing application, cloud environment performance.
- Experience with Web Analytics data and tools like Google Analytics, clickstream data and streaming or messaging technologies like Kafka, Amazon Kinesis, or SNS and visualization and charting frameworks like D3.
- Experience with server-side networking, proxying, and caching.
- Experience building applications using event-processing systems.
