Duties

  • You will apply expertise in one or more of the technical disciplines of science or engineering to provide legal advice and guidance on a wide range of intellectual property matters.
  • You will represent the command and prepare and present briefs, arguments and materials before the Patent and Trademark Office, administrative boards and Federal Courts.
  • You will provide legal advice and services to personnel on a regular basis.

  • This position may require travel from normal duty station to CONUS and OCONUS and may include remote or isolated sites. You must be able to travel on military and commercial aircraft for extended periods of time.


Qualifications

The successful candidate selected for this position will work in electric arts, computer arts and/or chemical arts. The successful candidate will also provide a range of intellectual property services, including drafting and prosecuting patent applications, reviewing research publications for potentially patentable material, providing litigation support for patent infringement claims, resolving patent and copyright administrative claims, and counseling on contract and technology transfer intellectual property matters such as rights in inventions, patents, technical data, and computer software.

Must be an active member in good standing of the bar of the highest court of a State, U.S. Commonwealth, U.S. Territory, or the District of Columbia, and be admitted to practice before a state or federal court and registered to practice before the United States Patent and Trademark Office (USPTO).

To qualify for DA-04 level (GS-12 equivalent): Applicants must have two years of relevant professional legal experience at the GS-11 (or equivalent) level or be a current GS-12 (or equivalent) attorney within the Federal Government. Note that for DA-04 (GS-11 and GS-12 equivalent) positions only, a second professional law degree (LL.M.) that required at least one full academic year of graduate study may be substituted for one year of professional legal experience.

To qualify for DA-05 level (GS-13 equivalent): Applicants must have in excess of two years of successful relevant legal experience.

To qualify for DA-06 level (GS-14 equivalent): Applicants must have at least three-and-one-half years of successful professional legal experience, in some combination of the practice areas identified above.

To qualify for DA-06 level (GS-15 equivalent): Applicants must have at least five-and-one-half years of successful professional legal experience in some combination of the practice areas identified above.

Experience refers to paid and unpaid experience, including volunteer work done through National Service programs (e.g., professional, philanthropic, religious, spiritual, community, student, social). Volunteer work helps build critical competencies, knowledge, and skills and can provide valuable training and experience that translates directly to paid employment.

Education

Must possess an undergraduate degree in electrical engineering, chemical engineering or must have completed the equivalent course work to have obtained an electrical or chemical engineering degree AND graduated from a law school accredited by the American Bar Association.
