Duties

  • You will repair, overhaul, modify, and install locking devices which make up security or surveillance systems.
  • You will use blueprints, specifications, and sketches to plan and determine the work sequence for lock repairs.
  • You will use tools and equipment of the locksmith trade to install locks throughout an organization.
  • You will troubleshoot commercially manufactured locking devices to determine repair or replacement requirements.

  • This position may require travel from normal duty station to CONUS and OCONUS and may include remote or isolated sites. You must be able to travel on military and commercial aircraft for extended periods of time.
  • You will be required to complete training, obtain, and maintain a government credit card for travel and travel-related purchases.
  • This position may also require the ability to obtain licenses for the operation of forklift, high lift and/or construction equipment.
  • May be required to obtain and maintain a special certification or licensing or to use specialized tools or equipment. For example this position may require Respirator Certification.
  • You will be required to wear personal protective equipment such as helmets, gloves, coveralls, glasses, goggles, respirators and safety shoes continuously for the duration of the work shift.
  • Successful completion of a pre-employment drug test (including marijuana) is required. A tentative offer of employment will be rescinded if you fail to report to the drug test appointment or fail the test. You will be subject to random testing.

This job has a screen-out element which will be used to determine minimum eligibility for this job. The Screen-out Element for this position is: Ability to perform duties of a LOCKSMITH without more than normal supervision as demonstrated by: 1) Perform a full repair cycle of locating malfunction, disassembly, repair, cleaning, reassembly, and reinstallation of a wide variety of commercially manufactured locking devices; 2) Determine the work sequence and select hand and power tools (e.g. files, picks, tweezers, tension wrenches, grinders, buffers, stamping machines, electric drills, soldering, irons, brazing torches, bench lathes and drill presses) to repair locking mechanisms; 3) Plan techniques to be used and apply judgement in the selection of tools and accepted trade practices to troubleshoot and neutralize locks according to appropriate guidelines, manufacturer drawings, diagrams, and technical manuals.

This announcement uses the Certain Personnel of the DoD direct hire authority to recruit and appoint qualified candidates to positions in the competitive service.

This position may be required to work in shifts.

This position is subject to work an uncommon tour, including nights, weekends, and holidays to meet mission requirements. Overtime or night differential pay and/or unusual duty hours may be required.

The employee may be required to work regularly scheduled overtime or overtime on an emergency call-back basis.

A forty hour work week is typical of this position.

Recruitment incentives may be authorized to eligible new hires.

A relocation incentive is generally a single payment intended to offset some of the relocation costs experienced by the selectee. A relocation incentive may be authorized.

May be assigned a truck stocked with controlled inventory and consumable materials.

Physical Effort: May be required to lift items weighing approximately 15 pounds. May be required to lift items weighing up to 40 pounds and heavier weights with assistance. The work may require standing, stooping , bending, kneeling, and working in awkward positions when installing and opening locks and emergency exit hardware on-site.

Working Conditions: Work is normally done inside. Occasionally work is done outside in bad weather or in areas that are drafty and poorly lighted. May be exposed to the possibility of cuts, scrapes and bruised or burns while using acetylene torches, brazing torches, and soldering irons.
