The Washington Metropolitan Area Transit Authority (WMATA) is seeking a candidate committed to transit for a project management role.

The position is in the Office of Bus Maintenance - Bus Engineering. The department manages the acquisition of new heavy duty transit buses purchased through Metro's Capital Program. The ideal candidate is a critical thinker with a capacity for cross departmental engagement and collaboration. Activities include, but are not limited to
  • Review of technical Documents to include design drawings
  • Reporting out to various stakeholders
  • Oversight of contracted inspectors

Minimum Qualifications

  • Graduation from an accredited college or university with a Bachelor's Degree in Mechanical Engineering, Electrical Engineering, Planning or a related field.
    • In lieu of a Bachelor's degree, a High School Diploma and four (4) years of progressively responsible experience in vehicle engineering, testing, components /sub-system design, planning, transit vehicle manufacturing, reviewing and drafting technical documentation and transit vehicle project management may be considered

  • A minimum of five (5) years progressively responsible experience in transit vehicle engineering, to include vehicle testing and one or more of the following: design, project planning, or vehicle inspection and;
  • Three (3) years related transit vehicle project management experience (preferably in the transit or rail industry); effectively negotiating with outside contractors/ consultants; and supervising a professional engineering and other technical staff.

The Assistant Project Manager will assist the Project Manager in the planning, scheduling and controlling of preliminary and final designs, manufacturing/overhaul, equipment procurement, and operational planning for major transit vehicle procurement projects within and /or impacting Authority. The incumbent supervises and coordinates the inspection and technical work performance of technical staff, following Authority policies, departmental guidelines and procedures and referring exceptions to the Project Manager and/or Senior Program Manager.

Essential Functions
  • Coordinates the review of scope of work (SOW) and technical specifications for design review with Engineering Services consultants for transit vehicles procurement.
  • Participates in the Conceptual Design Review, Preliminary Design Review and Final Design Review phase of the project to provide critical input and make sure the project is commencing within the technical specification and contract requirements.
  • Reviews and analyzes deign drawings, letter submittals, inspection and test results in order to provide timely approval and feedback to the project team.
  • Facilitates the oversite management of contractors by participating in field inspections, providing reports and mitigating potential reliability and safety issues.
  • Attends or conducts meetings including project coordination meetings to ensure effective project control. Prepares project-related correspondence to consultant, contractors, partnering Authority departments and outside agencies.
  • Develops or obtains engineering and administrative data of the project for planning, scheduling and project control purposes.
  • Provides technical support for testing and commissioning of transit vehicles and associated subsystems at various stages of the project.
  • Provide oversite for warranty support and review vehicles warranty activities.
