Description
This position is responsible for supporting the identification, development, and dissemination of strategic communications and grassroots engagement within ASHA’s Government Affairs and Public Policy (GAPP) cluster to advance ASHA’s Public Policy Agenda on behalf of the professions of audiology and speech-language pathology.


Responsibilities

  1. Collaborates on identifying, developing, executing, and evaluating coordinated advocacy strategies designed to advance ASHA’s Public Policy Agenda.
  2. Manages GAPP’s product approval process providing copyediting of all communications drafted by GAPP staff to present to the Chief Advocacy Officer. 
  3. Manages ASHA’s grassroots platform ensuring federal and state legislative and regulatory issues are promoted on the site. Develop and deploy Action Alerts using multiple communications channels (e.g., email, text, social media). 
  4. Manage ASHA Advocacy’s social media channels including developing and executing a social media strategy with GAPP staff.
  5. Manages communications sent on behalf of state associations by copyediting submitted content to follow ASHA’s Brand Voice.
  6. Compiles analytical reports on activity in areas that include ASHA advocacy’s social media sites, advocacy email communications, and grassroots engagements to determine the effectiveness of ASHA’s advocacy efforts and identify any new relevant trends.
  7. Assists in developing and updating web content created by the GAPP staff. Responsible for supporting advocacy meetings and events. Serve as back up for other functions identified by the Director, Advocacy Communications. 

Qualifications
Knowledge Typically Acquired Through

  • Bachelor’s degree in communications, journalism, public policy, or a related field
  • 5 years of experience in strategic advocacy communications, public relations, public policy, or a related field; experience at a nonprofit association is preferred

Scope and Depth of Technical Skills/Knowledge

  • Outstanding speaking, writing, editing, and proofreading skills, with mastery of APA style
  • Demonstrated understanding of content strategy for major channels (i.e., website, blog, social media, video, and email communications)
  • Experience with social media management tools (e.g., Sprout Social, HootSuite)
  • Working knowledge of grassroots campaigns and communications with experience using grassroots tools (e.g., VoterVoice) 
  • Demonstrated advanced use of technology to organize and execute work (e.g., Microsoft Word, PowerPoint, Excel, SharePoint, Teams, netFORUM, Epi Web editing, Zoom)
  • Working knowledge of printing, graphics, and media processes and familiarity with project management tools (e.g., WorkFront)
  • Working knowledge of legislative and regulatory processes – both on the federal and state levels
  • Working knowledge of issues that impact ASHA
