Traffic Service Worker

An Overview
The Department of Transportation and Environmental Services (T&ES) is seeking a Traffic Services Worker, who will implement pavement markings and traffic sign projects key to ensuring the safety of pedestrians, bicyclists, and motorists traveling within the public right-of-way. Field work will be performed under the direction of the Assistant Superintendent and the guidance of Traffic Services Worker III employees. This position requires one year of experience in maintenance or construction activities. In addition, this position assists the parking meter technicians in troubleshooting parking meters and installs traffic counters to record traffic volumes and speeds for traffic and safety studies. Work will be performed under adverse weather and traffic conditions. This position is considered essential during emergency operations.

The Opportunity
  • Installs and maintains overhead and ground mounted traffic signs within the public right-of-way, including regulatory signs, street signs, and guide signs;
  • Install and removes paper temporary signs as assigned;
  • Marks pavement, including stop bars, arrows, lane lines, crosswalks, and bike lane symbols using 3M tape, performed thermoplastic, and paint striping machines;
  • Installs traffic counters and traffic flow cameras to estimate the traffic flow, volumes, and speeds;
  • Operates and maintains a wide variety of hand and power tools, such as a jackhammer, core drill, hammer drill, band saw, propane torch, hammer, chisel, socket wrench, etc.;
  • Collects and deposits revenue from City parking meters;
  • Performs basic preventative maintenance on parking meters, such as changing the batteries and cleaning solar panels;
  • Installs Work Zones in accordance with supervisor's instructions and the Virginia Work Area Protection Manual;
  • Fills out Cityworks work orders to document completion of work tasks; and
  • Performs related work as required.

Minimum & Additional Requirements

To qualify for this position, all candidates must possess a High school diploma or GED; at least one year of experience in maintenance or construction activities; or any equivalent combination of experience and training which provides the required knowledge, skills and abilities. Possession of a valid driver's license issued by the the state of residence is required.

Preferred Qualifications

To be considered as an ideal candidate, one should also possess a two-year college degree; one year of computer experience, including work order software; knowledge of sign fabrication and work orders; experience operating and maintaining long line paint machines; some knowledge of Federal, state, and local regulations for traffic control devices; and Flagging and Work Zone certifications.
