Job Announcement

$2,500 Signing Bonus*

Pipe & Manhole Repair: Performs repairs of wastewater collection system lines, manholes, highway cave-in, VDOT paving schedules, and other related duties. Operates a pickup, crew step van, dump truck, and small engine equipment.

Sewer Maintenance: Performs a variety of duties in the cleaning and maintenance of the wastewater collection system. Assists with the setup and operation of truck-mounted sewer rodding machines and combination pressure cleaner/vacuum machines. Visually inspects sewer lines for defects and reports findings. Stormwater: Performs a variety of maintenance activities including concrete work, basic masonry, and carpentry tasks and basic stormwater structure maintenance and construction. Operates a variety of small power equipment. Operates a variety of fleet vehicles and vehicle accessories including large step vans, pick-up trucks, single-axle dump trucks, utility bucket truck, snowplows, and salt spreaders. May serve as crew leader. Ensures work is completed in accordance with VDOT specifications. Shares responsibility of job site safety, including traffic and pedestrian control. Performs and documents pre- and post-trip vehicle inspections. Performs visual inspections of sewer manholes and lines identifying defects and cleaning requirements.

*A $2,500 signing bonus is available to new county employees hired in the Senior Maintenance Worker position after completing six months of employment with satisfactory performance. Applicants must possess a valid CDL at time of application submission to be eligible.

Illustrative Duties

  • Performs various semi-skilled tasks, to include specialized concrete and asphalt work (e.g., setting forms, finishing, etc.);
  • General maintenance and repair of machinery;
  • Constructs culverts and catch basins;
  • Adjusts manholes to proper height;
  • Inspects and approves work of Maintenance Workers;
  • Provides guidance and training to Maintenance Workers;
  • Assists with spill cleanup, onsite at the disposal facility as well as throughout the county;
  • Coordinates various activities associated with repair and maintenance projects (e.g., paving, repairing sanitary sewer lines, rodding, and pressure cleaning operations);
  • Transports crew and equipment to work site;
  • Inspects, and reviews work of a crew engaged in a variety of basic maintenance, construction and grounds keeping activities;
  • May Lead grass cutting, sodding, seeding, and fertilizing activities;
  • Participates in the maintenance of building walks, gutters, catch basins, and retaining walls, as well as concrete and asphalt paving projects;
  • Completes daily and preventive maintenance reports;
  • Implements safety procedures;
  • Engages in safe working practices and complies with safety programs and guidelines;
  • Reports and monitors unsafe working conditions;
  • Complies with safety competencies.


Employment Standards

MINIMUM QUALIFICATIONS:
Any combination of education, experience, and training equivalent to completion of the tenth grade; plus two years of experience in maintenance, construction, or a related field.

CERTIFICATES AND LICENSES REQUIRED:
  • A valid motor vehicle driver's license.
  • Class "B" Commercial Driver's License (CDL).

NECESSARY SPECIAL REQUIREMENTS:
The appointee to this position will be required to complete a criminal background check, a pre-employment physical examination, and driving record check to the satisfaction of the employer.

Pre-employment, random, and post-accident drug and alcohol testing is mandatory for this position.

The appointee to this position will be required to participate in emergency callback staffing that is subject to occur twenty-four hours a day/seven days a week (24/7) and may periodically require working 12 to 18-hour shifts.

All newly hired employees are required to be fully vaccinated against COVID-19 (two weeks after the last required dose) as a condition of employment or obtain approval of a medical or religious exemption prior to their start date. Proof of an exemption or vaccination status will be required during the pre-employment onboarding process. New employees who obtain an exemption from the vaccine mandate for medical or sincerely held religious beliefs may be subject to a weekly testing requirement. Vaccinated employees and employees with a medical or religious exemption will complete the attestation online on their first day of employment or shortly thereafter.

PREFERRED QUALIFICATIONS:
  • Experience with wastewater collection system maintenance and/or repair including cleaning, inspection, repair, excavation, backfill, masonry, and asphalt paving.
  • Experience working with combination unit sewer cleaners (Vactor Truck) and rodders.
  • Experience working with wastewater related tools and equipment.
  • Experience using desktop or laptop computers regularly.
  • Experience using computer software programs such as Microsoft Office, GIS, and asset management programs.
  • Possession of any of the following certification:
    • Basic Traffic Control;
    • Confined Space Entry;
    • Virginia Flagger Certification.

PHYSICAL REQUIREMENTS:
Must be capable of climbing, crouching in relatively confined areas, and able to lift/slide up to 90 pounds with assistance. Must be able to walk on uneven ground such as hills, wooded, and marshy areas. Must be able to pass a pre-employment physical. Must be able to drive and operate county vehicles and equipment. Work requires performing tasks in an environment in which raw waste is present. Work requires entering confined spaces with weight restriction of 310 pounds. Work requires pushing, pulling, lifting, bending, stooping, walking, and climbing in and out of catch basins and manholes. Ability to work in hot and cold temperatures. Work requires performing tasks in adverse weather conditions. All duties performed with or without reasonable accommodations.
