School of Kinesiology Academic AdvisorThe George Mason University School of Kinesiology (SOK) within the College of Education and Human Development (CEHD) invites applicants for the position of Academic Advisor who can facilitate the academic progress and degree completion of students in the Undergraduate Kinesiology program. This is a full-time classified staff position reporting to the School Director.The SOK's mission is to educate high-quality professionals through a variety of innovative experiential learning opportunities to improve the physical performance, health, and well-being of the community across the lifespan. We do this by fostering interdisciplinary collaboration and using evidence-based practices to develop professional leaders. The SOK vision is to develop a global reputation for delivering exceptional instruction, conducting research of consequence, and providing service to the community to enhance overall societal well-being. Accredited degree programs in Kinesiology (B.S., M.S., and Ph.D. concentration) and Athletic Training (M.S.) are offered with approximately 450 undergraduate and graduate students. Responsibilities:Provides academic advising and support services to undergraduate Kinesiology students including pre-orientation advising and communication;Meets with students in-person and virtually regarding degree progress, graduation requirements and academic procedures;Educates students about university deadlines, policies and procedures;Initiates outreach to students to guide their academic planning;Supports students holistically through the proactive exploration of their academic interests and career goals;Participates and assists with preparation for new student orientations, admissions events and other school college functions including occasional weekend and evening attendance on Fairfax Campus;Identifies and assist academically at-risk students by developing plans to support the students' academic progress, challenges or special requests;Maintains advising records for each student;Helps students initiate academic actions (e.g., course substitutions, transfer credit inquiries and evaluations, course waivers);Engages with staff and faculty across the college and university to promote student success including academic and personal well-being; andCreates and update advising tools including advising sheets, orientation materials, and other resources that emerge.Required Qualifications:Bachelor's degree, or the equivalent combination of education and experience;Experience with Microsoft Office suite including Outlook, Word, PowerPoint and Excel;Ability to manage multiple tasks, analyze workload and prioritize as necessary for student benefit;Demonstrated verbal and written communication skills including virtual, face to face and electronic;Experience supporting diverse student populations;Ability to engage positively with students in an academic setting;Ability to work independently as well as collaboratively as part of a team; andTakes initiative to complete duties of the position without direct supervision.Preferred Qualifications:Master's degree;Academic Advising experience at the collegiate level;Banner 9 training and use; andNavigate advising system training and use.
