The Division of Safety and Facilities aims to provide a safe and secure campus environment for all members of the university community through best-in-class technological and physical infrastructure, proactive assessment and analysis, and a caring team of professionals dedicated to upholding the university’s values with the highest level of care.

Facilities, Planning, Construction, and Management, a department in GW’s Division of Safety and Facilities manages and maintains GW’s property and grounds on all three of GW’s campuses. Our maintenance team includes electricians, carpenters, painters, HVAC technicians, locksmiths, and plumbers. Reporting to the Supervisor, Facilities Operations, the General Maintenance Technician (GMT) supports facilities maintenance operations as a member of the maintenance team at GW’s Foggy Bottom Campus.

FPCM is dedicated to supporting GW’s academic mission by providing high-quality services to the campus community. We are seeking team members who have a strong sense of personal accountability and integrity. The individual selected for this role will be able to demonstrate success working independently, taking initiative, and advocating for themselves and other members of the GW community with great discretion.


Responsibilities include:

  • The GMT will independently perform semi-skilled and sub-journey work in the maintenance, repair, remodeling, alterations and construction of buildings, grounds, facilities, and equipment.
  • Additionally, the GMT performs skilled work in carpentry, plumbing, steam fitting, electrical, mechanical and machinist work in under the technical direction of a journey-level trades worker.
  • Usage of electronic data collection devices to log locations and visual inspections of fire extinguishers and other equipment as needed
  • Performs minor repairs on: building fixtures, plumbing, heating, laundry and kitchen equipment, motors and electrical appliances; electrical circuits, steam or waterlines, plumbing fixtures, lights and partitions; clean clogged drains and sewer lines; broken windows, doors, screens, floors, floor coverings, and painted surfaces.
  • Perform data entry into various software systems such as work order management systems and inspection tracking software
  • Detects and assesses the need for major maintenance repairs; escalates repairs that require the technical direction of a journey-level trades worker.
  • Performs preventive maintenance on equipment, buildings, and building systems to ensure safe operation.
  • Maintains required documentation and effectively responds to clients’ maintenance requests in a timely and professional manner.
  • May assist in the fabrication of equipment and materials constructed in trade shops in accordance with any assigned work requirements.
  • Operates hand tools, power tools and other shop equipment as needed.
  • Operates automotive equipment to transport materials and supplies.
  • Collaborates with other FPCM teams and GW partners to provide shared support for various division wide special projects.
  • Performs related responsibilities as required.
