Undergraduate Education manages the Undergraduate and Mason Core Curriculum, Office of Academic Advising, Office of Fellowships, and the Mason Impact initiatives. We provide leadership for the university community by:Creating transformational educational programs and initiativesBuilding campus and community partnershipsSupporting student academic successFacilitating Mason Impact activitiesThe mission of the Office of Academic Advising (OAA) is to provide leadership for a consistent and quality undergraduate academic experience at George Mason University. The OAA consists of the Director of Undergraduate Student Success, an Assistant Director who manages a team of Exploratory Advisors, and Advising Coordinators. The OAA works collaboratively with academic units through the Academic Advising Liaisons Committee, and the Mason Academic Advising Network to provide academic advising to students in programs across Mason, and with University Life (especially Success Coaching and Career Services) to provide holistic support for students.About the Position:Reporting to the Assistant Director of Advising, the Academic Advisor I - Exploratory lays the foundation for academic success at Mason and beyond by guiding students in the selection of a major based on their academic, career, and personal goals and interests, and transitioning them to advising within an academic unit. The Exploratory Advisor will take a holistic advising approach with students and discuss academic, career, and personal interests, make connections to class selection and career goals, and provide information on major selection, academic policies, procedures, and practices. This also includes working through various academic requests, forms, and appeals. Exploratory Academic Advisors at Mason contribute to Mason's strategic goals of preparing career-ready graduates, while increasing graduation and retention rates. Exploratory Advisors also contribute to the activities of the Office of Academic Advising and to the Mason advising community.Responsibilities:Advising:Beginning with admission to the University, guide an assigned caseload of students to major selection that is in-line with their academic, career, and personal goals and interests, ultimately transitioning them to advising within an academic unit;Communicate with academic units about students redirected to a different major to provide quality and consistent academic advising toward a new major;Provide individual and group advising meetings for students that will take place in-person and virtually;Communicate timely with students via email, phone, and other communication platforms, providing thorough and accurate responses to students' questions and concerns;Advise students in course selection and major declaration; guide students in program and university requirements; maintain continued interaction and follow-up with assigned students;Discuss academic interests and make connections to career and personal goals;Provide information on academic policies, procedures and practices;Assist with registration and other necessary procedures for degree progress and timely graduation;Work with students on warning, probation, returning from suspension, and terminated from major, to develop student success plans and increase likelihood of timely major selection and degree completion;Refer students to appropriate university resources (Success Coaching, Career Services, CAPS, Learning Support Service, and others);Organize and maintain office files and student records, to include advising notes in the Navigate communication platform; andWork occasional evening and weekend hours, particularly in the summer for orientation related activities and required events.Student Impact and Outreach:Support admissions and orientation events, administrative and programming responsibilities, curriculum development, and/or other duties as assigned;Engage in proactive outreach efforts to maximize student retention and success;Identify and share co-curricular opportunities, such as study abroad, undergraduate research, internships, student activities, and other campus events; andDevelop resources and materials for student advising to be distributed to students electronically and physically.Training and Technology:Participate in university-wide advising training and ongoing professional development;Collaborate with units across Mason to develop networks of student support; andUtilize the university digital tools and CRM to track student progress, record student interactions, and make referrals.Other duties:Attend regular meetings with key stakeholders involved in the development and implementation of programs;Serve on committees and other projects as assigned; andParticipate in first year student experience programming, retention programming and outreach, and University technology platforms (CRM, website, degree audit) for Exploratory students.Required Qualifications:Bachelor's degree, or equivalent combination of education and experience;Outstanding verbal and written communication, organizational and outreach skills;Demonstrated working knowledge of student transitional issues;Demonstrated knowledge of academic advising and career development as it pertains to exploratory, undeclared, terminated (from major), and non-degree undergraduate students;Ability to meet deadlines, work accurately and quickly with attention to detail, and able to manage multiple complex programs and projects simultaneously;Demonstrated commitment to customer service;Conflict resolution skills;Demonstrated ability to work with a culturally and ethnically diverse population of students, faculty, and staff;Must possess demonstrated professional experience working in a university setting (generally 1-3 years);Experience with serving and supporting diverse student populations; andExperience with or demonstrated knowledge in academic advising and student success coaching.Preferred Qualifications:Master's degree in Higher Education, Student Personnel, Counseling or related field; or equivalent combination of education and experience;Knowledge of Mason curriculum, policies, and processes;Experience with or demonstrated knowledge of one or more of the following areas: academic curriculum planning, orientation, disability services, veteran's services, career services, student involvement, and student rights and responsibilities;Experience with educational database management systems and customer relationship management systems (CRM); andDemonstrated experience with leadership, communication, program development, and administrative skills in previous experience and interview process.
