AARP's Policy, Research and International Affairs leads the development and communication of AARP's public policies and, research and insights on the issues that matter to people 50-plus.

Directs the policy agenda to drive and support public policy priorities within areas of expertise (Social Security, Retirement Savings, Employment, Tax and Low Income Programs). Collaborates with cross-functional teams to support public policy campaigns and advocacy strategies. Cultivates and maintains strategic relationships with thought leaders and influencers across industries. Collaborates with senior management in the development of strategic plans.

Responsibilities

  • Directs and manages direct reports and matrixed teams.
  • Serves as internal and external thought leader in area of expertise. Writes reports and recommendations that demonstrate deep subject matter expertise and exhibits thought leadership and supports enterprise objectives.
  • Leads or assists with the development of strategic priorities across the organization.
  • Analyzes federal and state legislative and regulatory proposals and provides objective policy analyses to inform national and state debates and the organization's position and engagement.
  • Conducts policy research and analysis to identify opportunities and develops solutions for external and internal stakeholders. Plans and implements research projects.
  • Produces written reports and convenes public meetings to disseminate findings, share best practices, and advance solutions.
  • Represents the organization externally at key forums, meetings, advisory boards, and/or with media. Builds strategic relationships with thought leaders and influencers across industries.

Qualifications

  • 10+ years of experience in public policy analysis related to economic issues such as employment, retirement security, and/or public benefits programs.
  • An advanced degree, such a masters-level degree in Public Policy, Economics, or a related field, or a J.D.
  • Experience managing multiple complex projects at the same time required. Experience working in matrix-management structure helpful.
  • Ability to thrive when managing concurrent priorities, tight deadlines, and multiple stakeholders who sometimes offer divergent points of view.
  • Excellent written and verbal communication skills, with the ability to produce quickly high-quality documents, reports, and presentations.
  • Ability to work effectively with people, gain internal respect, build partnerships across the organization, and work collaboratively toward shared objective.
  • Capacity to make clear and decisive recommendations in a timely manner based on rigorous policy analysis and organizational directives.
  • In-office environment with the ability to work effectively surrounded by moderate noise.

Flexible Work Arrangement (FWA)

AARP observes Mondays and Fridays as telecommuting workdays, except for essential functions. Remote work and telecommuting can only be done within the United States and its territories.
