Westat's 9-week summer internship experiences will be hosted virtually, or on-site at our U.S. office-based locations. Our interns can expect to work 40 hours per week, Monday through Friday. The program will begin on Monday, June 5, 2023, and end on August 4, 2023.
During the summer internship program, you will be assigned a project deliverable and will present during the final week of the program. You will also attend educational programs and networking events.
This position may be remote. The pay rate for this role is $25/hr. Interns are responsible for securing their own housing should they select an on-site role.
Westat is seeking a communications intern for a U.S. Department of Education funded technical assistance center. The Region 14 Comprehensive Center (R14CC) serves the state education agencies in Arkansas, Louisiana, and Texas to improve outcomes for all students. The R14CC includes thought leaders from a wide variety of backgrounds who provide cutting-edge expertise to our clients. You will work with a mentor from our Communications team who will support you as you collaborate with teams across 21 active projects. You will support the implementation and development of communications across client-driven projects. You will contribute toward internal and public-facing deliverables that will be used and seen by the states we serve in addition to the U.S. Department of Education. This a great opportunity to understand how to communicate to audiences at federal, state, and local levels.

Job Responsibilities:
Support the development (writing, editing, interviewing) of content for website stories and social media campaigns that provide value for our clients and teams.
Provide research and administrative support for content creation across multiple audiences and channels, including feature articles on the R14CC and Westat websites.
Support the development and implementation of communication strategies, materials, and editorial calendars for communication across multiple audiences and channels.
Help translate technical findings and data into content delivery that is user-centered and engaging.
Work independently and collaboratively as part of a cross-functional team, meeting deadlines, and proactively updating teams on progress through project management software, regular meetings, and email.
Basic Qualifications:
Currently enrolled in a master's degree program.
Background, experience, or relevant coursework in writing, graphic design, visual media, marketing, and/or public communications.
Proficiency in MS Office Applications (e.g., Word, PowerPoint, Outlook, Excel).
Working knowledge of Adobe Creative Suite.
Preferred Qualifications:
Interest in topics such as K-12 education, postsecondary education/training, rural education, educational equity, technical assistance/capacity-building services, and education research and/or program evaluation
Familiarity with the evidence base for effective practices, programs, and interventions in K-12 education.
Experience using Drupal or WordPress as a content editor.
Interest and/or knowledge in UX/UI design Interest and/or knowledge in SEO and Google Analytics (GA4).
Strong attention to detail with commitment to clear, concise, and correct communication.
A passion for creative, informative, and compelling storytelling (written and visual) that resonate with target audiences.
