Minimum Qualifications

Education
  • Bachelor's Degree in Civil Engineer, Mechanical Engineer, or a related field

Experience
  • Up to three (3) years of experience in mechanics of materials, statics and dynamics, and the theory and application of stress and strain models
  • Using Microsoft Suite of programs such as Word, Excel, PowerPoint, Access, and familiarity with Computer Aided Design Software
  • Using advanced database driven software platforms to organize large amounts of data, conduct analysis of this data, and recommend corrective action

Certification/Licensure
  • A valid motor vehicle operator's permit issued from jurisdiction of residence
  • RWP, Level 2 training within 90 days of hire and maintain for the duration while in job

Preferred
  • A passing grade on the Fundamentals of Engineering (FE) examination
  • Familiarity with Computer Aided Design Software

Job Summary

The Associate Track Engineer is an entry level position within Washington Metropolitan Area Transit Authority (WMATA) Track Engineering Team, with the potential to becoming a professional track engineer and/or Division Engineer. This position will support capital planning pursuits and provide maintenance in the renewal of track assets and correction of track issues. The position requires periodic to extensive work in the field working alongside WMATA's track maintenance, multiple engineering disciplines (Civil, Traction Power, Automatic Train Control, Construction, Rail Car) and engineering consultants. The position is primarily focused on ensuring the efficient and effective operation of the existing railroad and supporting senior track engineers in the achievement of this critical goal.

Essential Functions
  • Supports the upkeep and execution of WMATA's Rail Stress Management Program in accordance with WMATA's Heat Countermeasure Program.
  • Supports the refinement and execution of WMATA's Rail and Wheel Interface Program.
  • Supports the maintenance and execution of WMATA's Rail Grinding Program and Rail Lubrication Program.
  • Utilizes WMATA's linear asset management software tools to identify maintenance needs and execute long range planning in order to ensure WMATA maintains all track components to a state of good repair.
  • Applies updates and maintains WMATA's standard track drawings, specifications, maintenance manuals with supervision.
  • Investigates operating track problems, both in the field and in an office environment, prepares reports to describe findings, and supports the analysis efforts to develop a cost-effective engineering solution.
  • Prepares briefings to explain technical challenges to management staff with guidance from more senior track engineers.
  • Partners and conducts market research with transit industry suppliers in order to stay abreast of evolving technologies and draw conclusions as to the applicability of these technologies to the WMATA operating track environment.
  • Implements WMATA's track geometry standards, and industry research involving track and wheel dynamics.
  • Supports the production of EMIs and technical studies.
  • Supports the execution of WMATA's Derailment Investigation process with supervision and guidance from senior track engineers.
  • Supports track maintenance planning efforts by reviewing track inspector defect records and automated track inspection records.

OTHER FUNCTIONS
  • Reviews track inspector defect records and automated track inspection records to support track maintenance planning efforts.
  • Execution of WMATA's Derailment Investigation process with supervision and guidance from senior track engineers.
  • Uses advanced database driven software platforms to organize large amounts of data, conduct analysis of this data, and recommend corrective action.
