Duties

As an Assignment Editor, you will perform duties such as:
  • Assists the service chief, the Executive Producer and Managing Editors in ensuring that content on radio, television and service's digital platforms are of the highest production and content quality, in line with VOA Charter and the agency's best practices guide.
  • Reviews a wide variety of news sources, including news wires and news feeds, broadcasts on other Networks, new reports prepared by the News Center, and other source material, and
    stays constantly abreast of news events, developments and trends to have a thorough understanding of what coverage is required.
  • Oversees the versioning and adaption of stories produced in the service and the SCA division for a wider audience.
  • Assigns items to stringers with instructions for them to translate, conduct interviews related to the item, and otherwise prepare a script, broadcast, .interview, or other content, as assigned.
  • Serves as a COR or back-up for stringers and recruits, trains and in general oversees the activities of freelance reporters, correspondents, and staff reporter.

  • This is a national security position. If selected, this position requires the completion of the SF-86.
  • Suitability Determination: If selected, you will be subject to a background investigation to establish your suitability for federal employment. The background investigation will include, among other aspects, a review of your credit and legal history.
  • This position is not covered by a Union Agreement
  • The full performance grade level for this position is GS-13.


Qualifications

Screen out Factor: Applicant must have fluency in both English and Dari/Pashto languages that enables you to speak, read, write, report, and translate in both languages. This language screen out factor must be included in your resume.

Applicants must have a minimum of one year of specialized experience at a level of difficulty and responsibility comparable to the GS-12 or comparable pay band in the Federal service or equivalent experience in the private sector.
Specialized Experience is experience that has equipped the applicant with the knowledge, skills and abilities to successfully perform the duties of the position. Specialized experience includes ALL of the following
  • Assigns and coordinates news and feature material and content elements for radio, TV and the internet based on news events and developments,
  • Produces balanced, accurate, comprehensive material, selects news stories, and conducts interviews with various types of organizations and/or leaders of Dari/Pashto and English speaking countries.
  • Knowledge of Afghan its history, economics, culture, and socio-political development.


Education

Applicant cannot substitute education for experience at this grade level.
