The VAMHCS Mental Health Clinical Center is a specialty service which provides a variety of diagnostic and treatment services in inpatient, outpatient and community-based and/or home settings for Veterans with psychiatric, substance use disorders/addiction and trauma disorders. The Mental Health Nurse Practitioner (NP) is responsible for facilitating the fulfillment of the mission, vision, and values of the VAMHCS Mental Health Clinical Center

Duties include but are not limited to:
  • Functions autonomously as an independent clinician providing diagnosis and treatment of a wide variety of psychiatric disorders throughout all of VAMHCS at all Mental Health Service sites.
  • Skilled health care provider who utilizes critical judgment in the performance of comprehensive health assessments, and history and physicals to include differential diagnosis, ordering of diagnostic tests, and the prescribing of pharmacological and non-pharmacological treatment in the direct management of patients with mental illnesses and addictions.
  • Provides direct patient care to individuals and groups of patients in the Mental Health Clinical Center.
  • Incorporates interventions to empower Veterans using a recovery model and assesses the knowledge base and educational needs of mentally ill Veterans to develop a plan of care. The NP provides expert consultation, support, and direction to both inpatient and outpatient clinicians as an interdisciplinary team expert, resource, and consultant.
  • Manages the care of mental health problems by negotiating, procuring and coordinating services and resources needed by patients and families.
  • Responsible for the provision of high-quality and cost-effective care to patients with mental health needs.
  • Ensures that the practice of nursing is consistent with external standards such as TJC and internal standards such as the Clinical Practice Guidelines, VA Performance Measures, and Systems Redesign
  • Conducts and/or participates in research and staff education. The NP collaborates with other VAMHCS and community healthcare providers to exchange knowledge and share clinical expertise. The NP contributes to public policy.

HPT is an individual appointed to temporary positions in one or more VHA medical facilities performing clinical or research training experiences to satisfy program or degree requirements or receiving VA Health Professional Scholarship Program. HPTs can be either VA-paid or Without Compensation (WOC).

Basic Requirements:
  • United States Citizenship: Non-citizens may only be appointed when it is not possible to recruit qualified citizens in accordance with VA Policy.
  • English Language Proficiency. In accordance with 38 U.S.C. 7402(d), no person shall serve in direct patient care positions unless they are proficient in basic written and spoken English.
  • Graduate of a school of professional nursing approved by the appropriate State-accrediting agency and accredited by one of the following accrediting bodies at the time the program was completed by the applicant: The Accreditation Commission for Education in Nursing ( ACEN ) or The Commission on Collegiate Nursing Education ( CCNE ). In cases of graduates of foreign schools of professional nursing, possession of current, full, active and unrestricted registration will meet the requirement of graduation from an approved school of professional nursing. OR The completion of coursework equivalent to a nursing degree in a MSN Bridge Program that qualifies for professional nursing registration constitutes the completion of an approved course of study of professional nursing. Students should submit the certificate of professional nursing to sit for the NCLEX to the VA along with a copy of the MSN transcript. (Reference VA Handbook 5005, Appendix G6) OR In cases of graduates of foreign schools of professional nursing, possession of a current, full, active and unrestricted registration will meet the requirement for graduation from an approved school of professional nursing.
  • Current, full, active, and unrestricted registration as a graduate professional nurse in a State, Territory or Commonwealth (i.e., Puerto Rico) of the United States, or the District of Columbia.
  • Nurse Practitioners: On and after March 17, 2009, registered nurses appointed or otherwise moving into these assignments must meet and maintain the following additional qualifications. This includes employees appointed before March 17, 2009, who obtain such qualifications on or after March 17, 2009.
      Nurse Practitioners. A nurse practitioner must be licensed or otherwise recognized as a nurse practitioner in a State, possess a master's degree from a program accredited by the NLNAC or CCNE, and maintain full and current certification as a nurse practitioner from the American Nurses Association or another nationally recognized certifying body. The certification must be in the specialty (Acute Care NP/Family NP/Pediatric NP) to which the individual is being appointed or selected. (COPY OF CURRENT LICENSE, MSN TRANSCRIPT AND CERTIFICATION REQURIED)
Grade Determinations: The following criteria must be met in determining the grade assignment of candidates, and if appropriate, the level within a grade:
  • Nurse I Level III - Master's degree in nursing (MSN) and no additional nursing practice/experience.
  • Nurse II - Master's degree in nursing and approximately 1-2 year's of nursing practice/experience; OR a Doctoral degree in nursing or meets basic requirements for appointment and has doctoral degree in a related field with no additional nursing practice/experience required.
  • Nurse III - Master's degree in nursing and approximately 2-3 year's of nursing practice/experience; OR a Doctoral degree and approximately 2-3 year's of nursing practice/experience.
Preferred Experience: Experience using evidence based therapies in the treatment of PTSD (please make sure this experience is well documented in your resume)

Physical Requirements: Work is sedentary. Some work may require walking, standing and bending. May carry light items but work does not require any special physical efforts.
