Duties

Performs the duties necessary to install, analyze, modify, overhaul, repair, calibrate, and evaluate a variety of numerous complex operational electronic equipment and related devices. Typical examples of equipment serviced are sterilizers, cart and glassware washers, automated electronic and computer-controlled industrial laundry and food systems, Tunnel washer, 400lb. dryers, shuttle system, washer extractor, 600lb. washer, Energy Management heat reclaiming system, piece folder, 100lb. dryers, folder/cross folders and drives, electronically and/or pneumatic controlled ironers, spreader/feeders, lift stations, conveyors, dry cleaners, steam tunnel and extractors, along with pneumatically controlled folders, electronically controlled tray lines, dish machines, pot/pan washers, cooker/steamer, rotary oven, lowerators, pumps, compressors, etc.

These equipment systems are located in the Laundry, SPD, Research, Dietetics, and Canteen services, The equipment is made up of complex subsystems, including analog and digital control and alarm, circuitry (which controls interrelation of each subsystem and coordination of system operation), electromechanical, electronic, electric, hydraulic/pneumatic, heating systems, etc. In many cases, microcomputers or microprocessors control the operation and integration of the entire device and is often not obvious.

Independently determines the nature of the trouble and the extent of repairs. In addition, he shall use various measurement techniques to ensure that the equipment and all its intricate devices are aligned and functioning optimally. He must be able to diagnose problems quickly and make repairs, adjustments and alignments with a minimum of delay, fabricate parts and/or adapts non-standard parts to allow equipment to be used pending receipt of standard parts from supply. Interprets engineering drawings that combine electrical and electronic schematics, logic diagrams, and mechanical drawings in order to trace signal flow throughout the system while troubleshooting malfunctions. In some instances, the incumbent will draw own sketches to make modifications.

The unique design aspect of these industrial electronically controlled systems requires the use of non-standard practices to facilitate repairs. This often requires the incumbent to determine the need for modifications and design, build, · implement and test electromechanical and electronic design changes after administrative approval from the supervisor.

Must often diagnose, troubleshoot and repair equipment using very poor and general electric/electronic wiring diagrams and schematics. The lack of readily available contract personnel makes it necessary for the mechanic to be thoroughly versed in all aspects of operation, integration of systems and repair and maintenance of the same.

Performs other directly related duties as required.

EXPERIENCE: A specific length of training and experience is not required, but you must show evidence of training or experience of sufficient scope and quality of your ability to do the work of this position. Physical Requirements. In the performance of the equipment mechanic functions, he incumbent is expected to be able to do a considerable amount of walking, standing, stooping, bending, crawling, frequent lifting, carrying or otherwise handling items weighing up to 501bs. Incumbent must be able to work from ladders in congested areas, where incumbent is expected to work overhead in tight, cramped or awkward positions for prolonged periods of time. Incumbent must be able to work under and inside of a variety of equipment.

Working Conditions. Must be able to work in areas not adequately lighted, ventilated and heated. Work surfaces are not usually even or may be slick or oily, also tight, cramped, wet, dry and dusty locations. Incumbent may be exposed to moving machinery and be subject to sharp edges and may receive cuts and bruises, minor burns, scrapes, and electrical shocks. Incumbent is subjected to extreme hot and cold temperatures; work is usually dirty, dusty, and greasy, with exposure to a potentially hazardous or contagious environment found within a complex medical center. Must be able to use good judgment and initiative to accomplish this job, because most of the time he will be working alone.
