Since 1977, the Fairfax County Department of Transportation (FCDOT) has served the Fairfax County community by enhancing mobility, safety, and the quality of life of residents, businesses, and visitors through planning, coordinating, funding, implementing, and sustaining a multimodal transportation system. FCDOT is seeking a motivated and public service-oriented GIS Analyst I to join the Funding Section, primarily to perform a variety of duties under the direction of the Department GIS Coordinator to develop and implement GIS solutions. In a quickly evolving environment, this position will provide a rewarding experience for an individual interested and invested in improving public transportation.

Responsibilities include:

  • Creating, developing, and maintaining GIS data, associated attribute information, and metadata.
  • Performing quality control checks on GIS data and attribute information.
  • Utilizing GIS to analyze data and creating presentation quality maps and cartographic material for staff, county officials, and the public.
  • Performing basic spatial analysis.
  • Supervising field data collection using GPS, performing data post-processing, and incorporating data into the county’s enterprise GIS.
  • Assisting in installing and maintain GIS related software and hardware, and valuating and recommending GIS software.
  • Assisting in training and supporting staff in the use of GIS and related practices; serving as liaison between users and vendor technical support staff on basic GIS issues.
  • Assisting higher-level analysts in defining GIS needs/requirements and designing and testing GIS applications.
  • Providing basic technical support for GIS COTS and in house applications; attending meetings and conferences related to GIS; demonstrating GIS applications.
  • Updating/assisting with GIS content on internet/intranet site, troubleshooting standard GIS hardware issues, and assigning data keys for geographic layers.
  • Interpreting and validating source documents for GIS data entry, performing updates to tabular data.
  • Performing any of the illustrative duties in support of the Emergency Operations Center (EOC).
  • Off-site meetings and site visits may require the operation of a personal and/or county vehicle.
  • Performing other duties as assigned.

Employment Standards

MINIMUM QUALIFICATIONS:

Bachelor's degree in computer science, geography or related field; plus course work in ArcView GIS or similar GIS software.

CERTIFICATES AND LICENSES REQUIRED:
Valid driver's license.

NECESSARY SPECIAL REQUIREMENTS:
  • All newly hired employees are required to be fully vaccinated against COVID-19 (two weeks after the last required dose) as a condition of employment or obtain approval of a medical or religious exemption prior to their start date. Proof of an exemption or vaccination status will be required during the pre-employment onboarding process. New employees who obtain an exemption from the vaccine mandate for medical or sincerely held religious beliefs may be subject to a weekly testing requirement. Vaccinated employees and employees with a medical or religious exemption will complete the attestation online on their first day of employment or shortly thereafter.
  • The appointee to this position must satisfactorily complete a criminal background check, credit check, and driving record check.


PREFERRED QUALIFICATIONS:
  • Bachelor's degree in computer science, geography or related field; plus one year of experience working with and developing systems utilizing GIS platforms or spatial analysis.
  • Knowledge of GIS data layer development and management using ArcGIS Desktop 10.x or higher and/or ArcGIS Pro 2.x or higher.
  • Knowledge of ArcSDE version editing, ArcGIS Arcade, Python or similar coding, and Adobe Illustrator and/or Photoshop.
  • Must have a customer service-oriented attitude.
  • Works well independently and in a team environment.
  • Strong analytic and technical skills, as well as strong written and oral communication skills.
  • Good organizational and time management skills, including ability to prioritize among multiple assignments and meet established deadlines.
  • Good interpersonal skills and demonstrated ability to establish and maintain positive working relationships.


PHYSICAL REQUIREMENTS:
Employee may be required to lift and carry computer equipment. Work requires the ability to operate keyboard driven equipment All duties performed with or without reasonable accommodations.
