Transportation Manager (Urban Planner II)
An Overview
This exciting position will play many roles and work on transportation planning projects throughout the department. They will represent the City of Alexandria on a wide range of technical, non-technical and policy issues to advance the implementation of the Alexandria Mobility Plan, the City’s 2021 update to its Transportation Master Plan. The candidate will focus on bus rapid transit projects and staffing regional bodies, such as the Northern Virginia Transportation Authority and the Transportation Planning Board. This position may support other activities of the division including pedestrian/bicycle planning, Vision Zero, long range planning and development review. The ideal candidate will be a generalist with a passion for all things transportation and will also be detail oriented, good with numbers, and have strong communication skills. Experience with GIS, Streetlight data, and other transportation software is a plus. The candidate should be flexible to support the Transportation Planning Division where needed, but is also encouraged to take initiative to identify additional areas where they can add value.

Minimum & Additional Requirements
Four-Year College Degree from an accredited college or university in regional, or urban Planning, or a closely related field such as Architecture, Landscape Architecture, Geography, Urban Studies, Public Administration, Physical Sciences, Historic Preservation, or Environmental Studies; three years of experience or Master's degree with 1 year experience; or any equivalent combination of experience and training which provides the required knowledge, skills and abilities.
Preferred Qualifications
Master's Degree; more than 1 year of planning experience in an urban setting; direct experience working with transit and/or bike/ped projects; ability to prioritize work, meet deadlines, manage budgets, and ensure accountability; familiarity with transportation planning principles, traffic safety principles, pedestrian and bike mobility and safety, street design, and traffic engineering.

Responsibilities and duties
LEADERSHIP
- Represents City interests on regional bodies and prepares Council members for meetings of regional bodies
- Manages, and assists with managing, consultants, contracts and budgets
- Serves on various teams to achieve Division and City goals to ensure alignment with transportation plans, goals and objectives. These can include the pedestrian and bicycle program, Vision Zero, long-range planning and development review
- Effectively communicates information to the public, senior management, staff and colleagues via email, social media, news releases and oral presentations to City Council and the community
- Engages regional partners to advance common interests related to transit, legislation, policies, and other transportation topics
- Works with various departments on bus rapid transit projects.
- Serves as project manager for smaller transit and bike/ped projects and provides support on larger projects
- Manages transit data and analytics for reporting and project planning purposes.
- Develops and implements new and creative public engagement strategies, including advising and working with internal communications officers
- Performs other relevant duties as assigned
