Overview
The City of Alexandria’s Office of Communications and Public Information is seeking a proactive and creative Visual Content Specialist.
The Visual Content Specialist understands the significance of leveraging digital assets to connect and engage with the City’s diverse community stakeholders and is committed to brand consistency. They will be a key contributor across the City’s digital platforms including websites, social media platforms, video channels and print publications.
They will collaborate with communications professionals within the office and across other City departments to develop, produce, and publish timely and appealing content to support the City’s objectives.
Responsibilities
Ideal Candidate
The ideal Visual Content Specialist candidate has thorough knowledge of multimedia communications techniques, and production skills. Proven experience with video, digital, social media and print production techniques. They will have superior presentation and communication skills, and demonstrated, hands-on experience managing digital channels.
Considerable experience in journalism, field reporting, public relations, and community engagement is preferred. Ability to establish priorities and to accommodate to a fast-changing high-volume workload is necessary.
Essential Knowledge, Skills and Abilities
Requires knowledge and experience independently producing creative materials for digital, video, and print outlets. Must be proficient with industry-standard creative software, such as Adobe Photoshop, InDesign, Illustrator, Premiere Pro, After Effects, Acrobat, Final Cut Pro.
Proficiency with Microsoft Office and O365. Professional experience creating and regularly publishing digital content for social media platforms including Instagram, TikTok, Facebook, Twitter, Snapchat, WhatsApp, Nextdoor, LinkedIn, etc. Ability to prepare clear, well documented reports. Ability to establish and maintain effective working relationships with users and co-workers.
About the Department
The Office of Communications & Public Information (OCPI) develops, coordinates and delivers meaningful and responsive communications for the community and for City employees. OCPI develops and directs a City-wide communications program, including content on the City’s website, and provides guidance and direction to other City government communicators.
The Office of Communications and Public Information is currently undergoing an exciting revitalization and reorganization, including new leadership, new direction from City Council and the City Manager, increased resources and a new vision for communications, public information and community engagement throughout Alexandria. We are working to build an organization that tells Alexandria’s story, builds relationships, and connects with the community using community engagement, communications planning, media relations, creative production and distribution and qualitative and quantitative evaluation tools.
OCPI’s current staff of 12 develops external and internal messaging; provide oversight and maintenance of content on the City’s external and internal websites; administers the City’s language access program; distribute routine and emergency information to employees and the public; design and layout print publications for external and internal use; develop and produce external and internal video content; coordinate with the news media; and coordinate communications with City academies, special recognition events, and City boards and commissions. OCPI has been serving as the City’s public information and communications lead during the COVID-19 pandemic.
Minimum & Additional Requirements
Four-Year College Degree; Completion of college-level courses in communications, graphic design and computer science.
Preferred Qualifications
1-3 years of progressively responsible experience producing digital or print media in a production environment to include experience as a field reporter, producer or director; proven experience managing social media content strategy and production; experience producing creative content for television, government or non-profit organizations.

- Create multimedia assets that align with and further establish the City’s brand and priorities
- In collaboration with City stakeholders, produce videos highlighting key issues, special events, and updates from City leaders
- Capture and publish photography and videography in real time at events and activities in the community
- Collaborate and consult with colleagues to develop and execute creative and impactful visual content campaigns across digital channels
- Design graphics, print publications, illustrations, infographics and other creative materials
- Assist with various graphic design projects including but not limited to logo/brand identity, event collateral, digital or social graphics, and website design
- Use analytical tools to measure success of creative assets on social media and provide reports and recommendations to increase or improve engagement
- Coordinate with stakeholders to identify requirements, specifications and implementation plans for developing new digital or print media
- Assist with posting or updating digital content on City websites and third-party platforms Perform other work-related duties as assigned.
