Duties

The Medication Management Pain Management Team (MMPMT) Physician Assistant (PA) will work in a collaborative practice model providing comprehensive medication management services within the Integrative Pain Recovery Service (IPRS) clinic within the Hampton VA Medical Center. IPRS clinic is an interdisciplinary clinic focused on recovering patients with disabling chronic pain and multiple comorbidities. The MMPMT PA will work in conjunction with a Clinical Pharmacist Practitioner (CPP) to provide team-based care in the prescribing or deprescribing of opioids and non-opioids for pain, and the provision of medication for Opioid Use Disorder (OUD) when clinically appropriate. The position is dedicated to delivering coordinated are focused on pain recovery, risk mitigation and harm reduction, and management of complex pain comorbidities like substance use disorder (SUD) and posttraumatic stress disorder (PTSD).

Duties include but not limited to:
  • Working in close collaboration with the MMPMT Clinical Pharmacist Practitioner with expertise in pain management and OUD.
  • Provide integrated pain care in accordance with the Stepped Care Model for Pain Management.
  • Provide safe and effective opioid therapy for the management of both chronic pain, and OUD.
  • Provide services for the prescribing of Buprenorphine related to the induction, stabilization, and maintenance phases of OUD management.
  • Collaborate with the PMT/IPRS as applicable, by assisting with referrals for nonpharmacologic treatment options as clinically indicated.
  • Implementing opioid risk mitigation strategies including overdose education and naloxone dispensing, urine drug screening, and prescription drug monitoring programs; and providing appropriate follow-up and monitoring.
  • Providing ongoing, comprehensive assessment and monitoring of overdose and suicidality.
  • Participating in VISN Pain Committee/Community of Practice meetings and other VISN directed activities as
    appropriate.
  • Performing other related duties as assigned by leadership.
  • Participation in Quality Management activities and compliance.
  • Participating in appropriate continuing education activities as necessary.
  • Be familiar with and adhere to the Medical Staff Bylaws of this facility.
  • Work effectively with patients, families, co-workers, and other health care professionals treating them with respect
    and dignity.
  • Comply with information security policy and procedures.
  • Provide recommendations and work with the interdisciplinary team to coordinate care to provide optimal functioning,
    level of pain, and quality of life for Veterans.
  • Be accessible and available to personnel in the PMT and primary care and specialty clinics for consultation on
    complex cases.

Work Schedule: Full-Time Monday - Friday 8:00 AM - 4:30 PM

Qualifications

Applicants pending the completion of educational or certification/licensure requirements may be referred and tentatively selected but may not be hired until all requirements are met.

Physician Assistant Basic Requirements
  • Master's degree in any discipline or a bachelor's degree in any discipline with one year of experience as a Physician Assistant ~AND~
  • Successfully passed the PA National Certifying Exam (PANCE) (or are you in the process to taking the exam) ~AND~
  • Currently hold, or will hold, a full and unrestricted license to practice in a State, Territory, or Commonwealth of the United States or in the District of Columbia.

The full performance level of this vacancy is Grade 3. The actual grade at which an applicant may be selected for this vacancy is in the range of 1 to 3.

Physical Requirements: This position requires visual acuity (including depth perception), keen hearing (aide permitted), clear distinctive speech, and manual dexterity in both hands. This position requires potentially long periods of continued walking (2-4 hours), standing (2-6 hours), stooping, sitting, bending, pulling (1-2 hours), and pushing (1-2 hours). lifting (>15 pounds), carrying (>15 pounds). Transferring patients and objects may be required. The incumbent may be exposed to infected patients and contaminated materials and may be required to don protective clothing. The incumbent may be exposed to patients who are combative secondary to delirium, dementia, or psychiatric disorders. Ability for rapid mental and muscular coordination simultaneously. The incumbent must be a mature, flexible, sensible individual capable of working effectively in stressful situations, able to shift priorities based on patient needs. Must complete annual Employee Health requirements, such as annual TB screening or testing, as a condition of employment. Must be able to work closely with others, as well as protracted or irregular hours of work. Must be compliance with the use of ergonomic exercises and employee safety requirements.
