Duties

  • Uses standard software and statistical methods/techniques to conduct economic analyses.
  • Assembles and manages appropriate data, developing tables, charts and graphics in the assigned area work.
  • Gathers and organizes data in a timely manner under limited direction.
  • Receives guidance in drafting written documents such as newsletters, reports and/or articles and drafts are reviewed by senior staff.

Basic Requirements :
1. Degree: economics, that included at least 21 semester hours in economics and 3 semester hours in statistics, accounting, or calculus.
OR
2. Combination of education and experience: courses equivalent to a major in economics, as shown in 1 above, plus appropriate experience or additional education.

Specialized Experience : Specialized experience is experience directly related to the position to be filled. Specialized experience must be described for each grade level advertised. The specialized experience requirements for this position are:

FOR THE GS-11 :
Qualifying experience for GS-11 includes one year of specialized experience comparable to GS-09 which is directly related to the work of this position and which has equipped the applicant with the knowledge, skills, and abilities to perform successfully the duties of the position. For this position, specialized experience is experience conducting economic analysis using automation software and statistical methods; compiling and maintaining data sets used for market analysis; and preparing analytical reports on economic studies relevant to agriculture, food, natural resources, or rural development.
OR
Successful completion of 3 years of progressively higher level graduate education leading to a Ph.D. degree or Ph.D. or equivalent doctoral degree; if related. Related degrees may include economics, agriculture, statistics, environmental science, nutrition if related to economic research.
OR
A combination of Ph.D level education and experience as described above.

FOR THE GS-12 :
Qualifying experience for GS-12 includes one year of specialized experience comparable to GS-11 which is directly related to the work of this position and which has equipped the applicant with the knowledge, skills, and abilities to perform successfully the duties of the position. For this position, specialized experience is experience conducting economic research and analyses and recommending data collection methods to be used; preparing analytical reports on economic studies relevant to agriculture, food, nutrition, natural resources or rural development; and participating in the presentation or publication of results of economic analysis.

FOR THE GS-13 :
Qualifying experience for GS-13 includes one year of specialized experience comparable to GS-12 which is directly related to the work of this position and which has equipped the applicant with the knowledge, skills, and abilities to perform successfully the duties of the position. For this position, specialized experience is experience planning economic research and analyses and developing the data collection methods to be used; preparing analytical reports on economic studies relevant to agriculture, food, nutrition, natural resources or rural development; and presenting results of economic analysis through presentations and publications.

Experience refers to paid and unpaid experience, including volunteer work done through National Service programs (e.g., Peace Corps, AmeriCorps) and other organizations (e.g., professional; philanthropic; religious; spiritual; community, student, social). Volunteer work helps build critical competencies and can provide valuable training and experience that translates directly to paid employment. You will receive credit for all qualifying experience, including volunteer experience.

This position is located in the United States Department of Agriculture, Economic Research Service. The selectee is not required to report to a government office, however, the option to work in one of the Agency offices may be available.
