Job Description
Work involves supervising and participating in the work of Broadcast Technicians in production or section work to ensure professional Senate Television and studio coverage. Work requires preparing shift work schedules, scheduling daily work assignments, assigning equipment to technicians, and training new employees. The incumbent has frequent contact with Senators, Senate staff, press secretaries, and others to receive information about their needs and facilitate their technical requirements. Work is performed under the general supervision of the Broadcast Production Manager.

Examples of Work
Schedules work to be performed by the section or production staff; assigns work and equipment to section technical staff; implements production policies and procedures. Supervises production of studio and Senate television productions; schedules and oversees studio and television production personnel including production directors and production technicians; evaluates employee performance; provides production support for Senate proceedings and programs; operates a variety of equipment. Maintains inventory of equipment and supplies; recommends purchase of equipment and supplies. Inspects the work of employees and provides coaching and counseling, as needed. Provides training to new employees; provides technical training to personnel on operation of television production equipment; maintains and coordinates technical standards for television productions. Provides production support for Senate proceedings and programs; operates a variety of equipment in the section. Assists Senate staff in coordinating production requirements for radio programs; oversees and supervises the pre- and post production of valid shows; manages radio actuality service; engineers and coordinates remote recordings of news conferences, interviews, and other productions. Writes, edits and/or maintains procedures and manuals. Participates in Continuity of Operations (COOP) Planning, including exercises, drills and training.

Minimum Qualifications

Work requires a Bachelor’s Degree in radio/television production or related field, and five to eight years of technical production experience in radio/television, including experience in the production area supervised; or any equivalent combination of education and experience that provides the following knowledge, abilities and skills:

  • Knowledge of the operational and maintenance characteristics of television and audio/video recording equipment.
  • Ability to supervise, schedule, assign, train, and evaluate the work of assigned technical production staff.
  • Ability to establish and maintain effective working relationships with supervisor, co-workers, and the public.
  • Ability to communicate effectively.
  • Ability to deal with others, using tact and diplomacy.


Work is performed in an office or in the field and requires sitting or standing for long periods and may require safely lifting objects up to 50 pounds.

Conditions of Employment
To be employed by a Senate employing office in a paid position in the continental United States an individual must:
1. Be a U.S. citizen;
2. Be lawfully admitted for permanent residence and seeking citizenship as outlined in 8 U.S.C. § 1324b(a)(3)(B);
3. Be (i) admitted as a refugee under 8 U.S.C. § 1157 or granted asylum under 8 U.S.C. § 1158 and (ii) have filed a declaration of intention to become a lawful permanent resident and then a citizen when eligible; or
4. Owe allegiance to the U.S. (i.e., qualify as a non-citizen U.S. national under federal law).
