Job Description
Work involves directing broadcasts for public distribution and providing production related equipment and systems support. Team leader duties require the incumbent to assign and monitor the work of assigned technical production staff, and assist in training new employees. The incumbent has frequent contact with Senatorial and committee staffs to coordinate script and production requirements and with outside public and news groups in setting up dial-up video conferencing and live satellite news feeds. Work is performed under the general supervision of a Broadcast Production Manager or Broadcast Section Supervisor.
Examples of Work
Directs the multi-camera broadcast of Senate proceedings to public and news outlets; directs the broadcast of Senate hearings; directs studio productions in a variety of formats including live satellite feeds, live cable call-in shows, and dial-up video conferencing. Manages radio actuality service; coordinates with Senate staff the production requirements for radio programs; schedules radio productions; prepares daily work orders, engineers and coordinates remote recordings of news conferences and interviews. Develops and schedules crew work assignments for studio programming; assists in producing new programming and coordinating script and show requirements with press staff and studio crew; serves as writer and producer on special projects. Operates a variety of production related equipment and systems; maintains and oversees the administration and use of equipment; troubleshoots and calibrates production equipment and performs preventative maintenance. Writes, edits and/or maintains procedures and manuals. Assists with performance evaluations of Broadcast Technicians. Serves as Technical Director in his/her absence. Participates in Continuity of Operations (COOP) Planning, including exercises, drills and training. Performs scheduling tasks and production staff assignments in the absence of the Production Manager.
Minimum Qualifications
Work requires a Bachelor’s Degree in radio/television production or a related field; and three to five years of experience directing live studio and field productions with a working knowledge of related technical positions; or any equivalent combination of education and experience that provides the following knowledge, abilities and skills:
- Knowledge of the techniques used to direct studio and field productions.
- Knowledge of operation and maintenance requirements of video and audio television production equipment.
- Ability to operate production equipment used to produce broadcast quality television productions.
- Ability to direct diverse productions, coordinate production requirements, schedule productions, and substitute as Broadcast Technical Director.
- Ability to establish and maintain effective working relationships with supervisor, co-workers, and the public.
- Ability to communicate effectively.
- Ability to deal with others, using tact and diplomacy.
PHYSICAL DEMANDS AND WORKING ENVIRONMENT
Work is performed in an office or in the field and requires sitting or standing for long periods and may require safely lifting objects up to 50 pounds.

Conditions of Employment
To be employed by a Senate employing office in a paid position in the continental United States an individual must:
