Duties

The incumbent's duties include the inspection, installation, troubleshooting, testing, calibrating, adjusting, modification, and dismantling of equipment; replacing parts, configuring elements to restore the equipment integrity, refurbishing, and making major and minor repairs of a wide variety of complex medical gas equipment and associated devices and systems. These systems include medical gases [nitrogen, nitrous oxide, oxygen and WAGD (Waste Anesthesia Gas Disposal)]; medical, lab and dental air compressors, and medical/surgical and dental vacuum pumps; bulk oxygen supply primary and secondary tanks and all ancillary equipment, auxiliary oxygen generators, and all bulk manifold feeds to the gas systems.

Incumbent will work independently with very little supervision while examining equipment malfunctions through the proper use of modern complex test equipment. Duties include identifying and diagnosing equipment failures to the system, module and component level, and being able to maintain critical patient life support systems such as: fixed and semi-fixed medical gas air compressors, medical/surgical vacuum pumps, dental air compressors and dental vacuum pumps; and unique equipment to the medical gas systems including all ancillary equipment such as, but not limited to, air filters, manifolds, hydraulic, pneumatic, vacuum, suction and pressure systems which include water, air, gas under pressure, and piped oxygen, air dryers, reserve tanks, valves, gauges and piping that meet the manufacturer's parameters of standards for operation and safety that shall comply with National Fire Protection Association (NFPA) 99, American Society of Sanitation Engineers (ASSE) 6000 series, and Joint Commission (JC). The incumbent establishes without supervision periodic maintenance inspections on all medical gas outlets, which must be precise; and in proper assembling, adjusting and calibrating of complex medical gas equipment and associated devices in order to ensure maximum benefits to the patient in the diagnosis and treatment for which the equipment was intended.

This position acts as technical advisor for matters that involve outside vendors performing repairs or contract work on in-house medical gas equipment. The incumbent makes recommendations to survey unserviceable medical gas equipment. The incumbent may be called upon to evaluate equipment being considered for purchase or to advise hospital resources/utility personnel on power requirements, environmental constraints, interface problems, safety precautions, etc. that must be given on a certain piece of equipment and will be the Subject Matter Expert for providing medical gas equipment repair. Incumbent is required to review work performed and overall performance of service vendors to ensure quality workmanship and that the equipment is repaired and performing to specifications.

Working Conditions
The incumbent is required to be able to lift at least 40 pounds. Incumbent is on his/her feet at least 50% of the time and may be required, due to making trouble calls and inspections, to walk approximately 3 miles per day. Climbing on ladders and scaffolds is commonplace and contributes to the arduous nature of the job. In other situations, there may be special requirements for agility or dexterity such as exceptional hand/eye coordination. Trips to satellite outpatient clinics are sometimes necessary and will involve transportation via station vehicle

Note: A full year of work is considered to be 35-40 hours of work per week. Part-time experience will be credited on the basis of time actually spent in appropriate activities.
