Job Description:

The School Nutrition Manager Trainee coordinates food and supply orders and deliveries; provides comprehensive training of all food service staff; supervises food services activities at assigned sites; organizes food preparation activities; assists food service workers with food preparation and serving; confirms quantities and quality of food items available for use; provides written reports; conducting site reviews at finishing kitchens; and complies with mandated health requirements. The School Nutrition Manager Trainee must be willing to travel between various schools.

Qualifications:
  • Education: Targeted job related education that meets organization's prerequisite requirements.
  • Certificates & Licenses:
    • Current Northern Virginia sanitation certification/Food Manager Certificate required.
    • Valid driver's license required.
    • School Nutrition Association certified desirable.
  • Experience: Job related within specialized field with increasing levels of responsibility required.

Essential Functions:
  • Assists other personnel to ensure an efficient and effective work environment.
  • Assists with coordinating catering functions to ensure adequate food, supplies, decorations, labor, etc. for scheduled events.
  • Collects free and reduced meal applications and determines eligibility under program guidelines.
  • Conducts training sessions and/or periodic site reviews of finishing kitchens to improve manager skills, assist managers in maintaining appropriate inventory levels and/or make recommendations concerning operating procedures.
  • Estimates food preparation amounts and adjusts standardized recipes as required to meet projected meal requirements and minimize waste.
  • Inspects food and/or supply deliveries to verify quantity and specifications of orders in compliance with mandated health requirements.
  • Inventories food, condiments, supplies and equipment at specified intervals to ensure availability of items and limit losses.
  • Maintains product nutrition information in compliance with USDA guidelines.
  • Manages site operations (e.g. monitor meal accounts, evaluate new products and/or menus, etc.) to provide safe and efficient food services at the assigned site in compliance with mandated nutritional and health requirements.
  • Monitors food service facilities (e.g. kitchen equipment, trays, utensils, etc.) to ensure a safe, clean and sanitary working environment.
  • Orders food, equipment and supplies to maintain an adequate inventory to complete jobs efficiently within budget guidelines.
  • Orients and trains new employees to work center and school site processes and provides information regarding site operations and activities.
  • Oversees quantity food preparation, cooking, serving and transportation of food and beverage items to meet mandated nutritional and health requirements.
  • Performs functions of other positions within area of responsibility to ensure adequate coverage of food service operations.
  • Prepares reports and documents (e.g. training records, meal program records, inventory reports, reconciliation reports, cash summary, payroll sheets, etc.) in compliance with established guidelines.
  • Processes receipts to complete and document transactions and/or prepare deposits for bank drop.
  • Promotes food and nutrition services to school and community to increase participation and building name recognition.
  • Responds to inquires of students, staff and the public to provide information and direction regarding nutritional programs and services.
  • Schedules work hours and assignments for food service staff to provide coverage for daily operations.
  • Supervises food service workers and other personnel as assigned (e.g. interviews, trains, evaluates, disciplines, etc.) to maximize the efficiency of the work force and meet shift requirements.
  • Performs other related duties, as assigned, to ensure the efficient and effective functioning of the work unit.

Clearances
  • Criminal Justice Fingerprint/Background Clearance.
  • Tuberculosis Skin Test.

Public Health Compliance
  • Proof of COVID vaccination. Exemptions for religious/medical will be reviewed.
  • Must follow safety and health protocols.
