Duties

As a Supervisory Hydrologist within the Virginia - West Virginia Water Science Center, some of your specific duties will include:

• Serves as Chief of the Water-Use and Availability Studies Section and as such is responsible for the technical direction and quality assurance of applied water-resources investigations and operational activities of the section.
• Works with the Water-Science Center Director and Associate Director on matters concerning hydrologic studies by sharing in the planning, development, and direction of new water-resources programs and the management of existing programs.
• Supervises and coordinates the section and field activities and assigns work tasks for an elite team of hydrologists and physical scientists in water-resources investigations and data-collection activities.
• Conducts and participates in complex technical aspects of water-resources investigations, particularly in areas involving surface-water quantity/quality and modeling, groundwater modeling, and geochemical processes.
• Reviews reports prepared in the section for editorial correctness and to assure technical accuracy. Oversees the development of innovative communication tools and marketing material.
• Operates government owned vehicle as an incidental driver.

Qualifications

BASIC EDUCATION REQUIREMENT: Applicants must meet A or B below to satisfy the basic education requirement for Hydrologist, all grade levels.

A. Successful completion of a full 4-year course of study in an accredited college or university leading to a bachelor's or higher degree in physical or natural science, or engineering that included at least 30 semester hours or the equivalent in any combination of courses in hydrology, the physical sciences, geophysics, chemistry, engineering science, soils, mathematics, aquatic biology, atmospheric science, meteorology, geology, oceanography, or the management or conservation of water resources. The course work must have included at least 6 semester hours or the equivalent in calculus (including both differential and integral calculus), and at least 6 semester hours or the equivalent in physics. **OR

B. A combination of education and experience-course work as shown in "A" above (30 semester hours or the equivalent in any combination of courses as specified in "A" above which must include at least 6 semester hours or the equivalent in calculus (including both differential and integral calculus), and at least 6 semester hours or the equivalent in physics), plus appropriate experience and/or additional education for a total of 4 years. The education or combined education and experience must be comparable in type, scope and thoroughness to that acquired through successful completion of a 4-year course of study as described in "A" above.

For GS-13:

In addition to the basic education requirement as stated above, applicants must have one year of appropriate professional experience in hydrology that is equivalent to at least the GS-12 level in the Federal service.

Examples of such experience include planning, executing and reporting on original hydrologic studies or ongoing hydrologic studies requiring a fresh approach to resolve new problems. The complexity of this work typically required extensive modification and adaptation of standard procedures, methods, and techniques, and the development of totally new methods and techniques to address novel or obscure problems for which guidelines or precedents were not substantially applicable. At this level, Hydrologists have extensive knowledge of the principles of hydrology and highly developed ability in their application, and wide latitude for the exercise of independent judgment to perform scientific work of marked difficulty and responsibility.
