Job Details

The American Speech-Language-Hearing Association requires all new employees to present proof they are fully vaccinated against COVID-19 when they start work. Description
The person in this position oversees the Special Interest Groups (SIGs) program - facilitating, supervising, and coordinating the functions and operations of all SIGs and their elected coordinating committees - and one Board of Special Interest Group Coordinators (BSIGC); facilitates the SIG leaderships’ adherence to minima and maxima SIG requirements; and supervises SIG staff.  The end result is to ensure the inclusion and integration of the SIGs (for subject matter expertise as appropriate) into the programs and work of the Association.   


Responsibilities

  • Serve as ex officio to the BSIGC.
  • Monitor initiatives/activities of SIG Coordinating Committees to ensure conformity to Association policies and procedures.  
  • Collaborate with other staff and members to identify opportunities for SIG inclusion and integration 
  • Oversee the programmatic aspects of special interest group publications and development and maintenance of online content.
  • Oversee the work of SIG ex officios as it relates to the SIG program.
  • Facilitate and conduct education and training of SIG ex officios and elected SIG volunteer leaders.
  • Oversee (prepare and maintain) unit, BISGC, and 20 SIG budgets.
  • Supervise the accurate and timely conduct of SIG nominations and elections.
  • Advise, liaise with, and direct work groups of professional and support staff in the execution of projects related to SIGs and related issues.
  • Coach SIG cluster staff: supervise and coordinate activities related to special interest groups within the unit and across the Association.
  • Represent ASHA as the liaison and expert consultant to other organizations with SIGs or chapters as assigned.
  • Communicate with the monitoring Vice Presidents in Speech-Language Pathology and Audiology.

Qualifications
Knowledge Typically Acquired Through

  • Graduate degree in a related field is required, MA or MS in speech-language pathology, audiology, with CCC-SLP or CCC-A is preferred.  
  • Five or more years of successful experience in speech-language pathology, audiology, or related area and association work experience

Scope and Depth of Technical Skills/Knowledge

  • Supervisory experience
  • Familiarity with common computer software programs, including MS Word and Excel
  • Computer skills necessary to access information and process products, including databases
  • Knowledge in the professional and governance content areas and the resources available

Scope and Depth of Non-Technical Skills/Knowledge

  • Proven ability to organize and prioritize multiple and complex projects and tasks
  • Proven ability to independently identify and manage sensitive and confidential matters
  • Proven ability to lead projects and work teams to accomplish projects as well as work cooperatively with staff and volunteers
  • Proven ability to develop and present, orally and in writing, accurate and complex, in-depth information and materials about special interest groups
  • Well-developed oral and written communication skills for interacting with consumers, members, volunteer leadership and outside groups/individuals (e.g., a publisher’s representative) in formal (e.g., contractual) and informal (e.g., mail/e-mail correspondence) contexts 
  • Knowledge of ASHA policies and procedures
  • Well-developed interpersonal and team-facilitation skills
