Job Description
Work involves scheduling daily work assignments, training and evaluating the work of Broadcast Engineers, as well as hands-on maintenance and troubleshooting of broadcast systems and equipment. The incumbent has frequent contact with Senators, Senate staff and committees, press secretaries, and others to receive information about their needs and facilitate their technical requirements. Work is performed under the general supervision of the Broadcast Engineering Manager.

Examples of Work
Assigns work, daily tasks and equipment to section engineering staff; trains, supervises, inspects the work of and coaches Broadcast Engineers; reviews staff performance and completes performance appraisals. Troubleshoots and provides engineering support for Senate Recording Studio, the Senate Chamber, hearing rooms and special events involving audio, video and control systems. Maintains inventory of equipment and supplies; recommends purchase of new broadcast equipment, systems and supplies. Assists Senate Recording Studio management and procurement teams with major broadcast system procurements including evaluating contractors project proposals. Writes, edits and/or maintains standard operating procedures and manuals. Implements policies and procedures pertaining to the operations and maintenance of the Recording Studio. Participates in Continuity of Operations (COOP) Planning, including exercises, drills and training.

Minimum Qualifications

Work requires a Bachelor’s Degree in electrical engineering or related field, and five to eight years of technical production experience in broadcast or audio/visual work. or any equivalent combination of education and experience that provides the following knowledge, abilities and skills:

  • Knowledge of the operational and maintenance characteristics of television and audio/video recording equipment and electronic engineering procedures relative to television, radio and networked audio equipment.
  • Ability to supervise, schedule, assign, train, and evaluate the work of assigned Broadcast Engineering staff.
  • Ability to establish and maintain effective working relationships with others through effective communication using tact and diplomacy.

Physical Demands and Working Environment 

Work is performed in an office or in the field and requires sitting or standing for long periods and may require safely lifting objects up to 50 pounds. Work may be in confined areas and require bending, climbing ladders and operation of personnel and equipment lifts.


Licenses, Certification and Other Requirements
• QSC QSYS Level 1 required; Level 2 preferred • Training and experience in fiber optic installation, termination and measurement • For education requirements please see Minimum Qualifications.
