Job Description
The position of Supervisor for School Nutrition Services will perform a full range of professional duties to review with an emphasis on human relations, employee training, and general operations. The selected candidate for this position will report to the Director of School Nutrition Services and will assist in the supervision of school-based leaders or as assigned, and provide guidance and assistance to regular and casual (substitutes) as required.
Qualifications
Education: BS Degree in Food Service Management, nutrition, or related field; master's degree or the equivalent in years of experience (+5 years).
Certificates & Licenses: Registered Dietitian (RD) or School Nutrition Specialist (SNS) is strongly preferred. Individuals must obtain SNS credentials within two (2) years of employment. Must possess a current Northern Virginia Food Sanitation and Safety certificate (or obtain it within 30 days of hire); possess a valid driver's license issued by the state of residence.
Experience: Minimum five years of food service administration and progressive supervisory experience; with a strong background in public school nutrition programs preferred. Ability to maintain good working relationships with administration, staff, and students in a team environment. Must possess computer and accounting skills; ability to communicate effectively in English, both orally and in writing.

Essential Functions
- Provides supervision in conjunction with the Director of all school food service managers and employees in ACPS; conducts operational audits and provides technical guidance and directions in the following areas:
- Adherence to federal, state, and county regulations applicable to the school food service program.
- Ensures annual professional development requirements are met by all staff, including mandatory Human Resources training.
- Manages the Annual Agreement between ACPS and VDOE/CACFP/SFSPHuman Resources: oversees job fairs, hiring, discipline, performance evaluations, schedules panel interviews for managers with school administrators, assigns
- managers and staff, coordinates and advertises manager and staff vacancies, oversees staffing requirements, and employee relations; handles employee complaints and grievances, and maintains open lines of communication with the Director.
- Payroll: reviews and approves all employee time and effort; reviews and approves staff leave requests.
- Interviews and hires all new hourly employees. Assigns substitute employees. Updates employee hires transfers and termination. Staffs local SNS programs based on established MpLH, in preparation for annual employment contracts, coordinates daily work hours with HR and location assignments.
- Completes Position Control Forms as required for new or updated positions. Assists in the development of new position descriptions. Coordinates with Human Resources in the posting of new positions. Assists the director in the interviewing and the selection of future department leadership positions.
- Coordinates the annual selection and purchase of employee uniforms.
- Strive to achieve established goals for food and labor by utilizing labor and resources efficiently and provide assistance to staff as needed to ensure the financial integrity of their school by monitoring MpLH monthly, informing the manager of monthly MpLH, and working with the manager to adjust staffing as needed.
- Assists in the supervision of managers and substitute employees; evaluates Field Op Supervisors and Admin Specialist, and assist as needed with managers annually.
- Provides general assistance to director with training, oversees staff development and monthly managers meeting, summer school, and other special programs as assigned, and manages one or more centralized special secondary programs described below. Coordinates, along with Director Back to School Training. Coordinates meals and snacks with the central kitchen manager.
- Coordinates Manager in Training Program; oversees the progression of managers in training and ensures appropriate skills and competencies are developed.
- Coordinate training programs for orienting new employees to Child Nutrition programs, including reviewing and updating the New Employee Training Manual with Field Operations Supervisors
- Oversees Annual Summer Feeding Program. Works with ACPS administration and the Alexandria Recreation Department to establish meal times. Staffs schools based on 30 MPLH. Trains administrative and school staff. Conducts SFSP debrief.
- Supervises the Field Operation Specialists (FOS). Reviews monitoring forms (SNP, CSCFP, SFSP) completed by FOS. Provides personnel management guidance. Evaluates FOS performance annually. Creates and updates Manager Handbook, Employee Handbook, and Hazard Analysis and Critical Control Point (HACCP) Plan.
- Oversees the daily operations of the program in the absence of the director.
- Attends semi-annual regional Virginia Department of Education meetings.
- Computers: General knowledge and ability to work all phases of operations including POS terminal
Physical Requirements/Environmental Conditions
- Light physical activity performing non-strenuous daily activities of administrative nature.
- Training personnel: Requires moderate physical activity performing somewhat strenuous activities of primarily product/technical nature.
- Requires physical exertion to manually move, lift (to 40+ lbs.), carry, pull, or push heavy objects or materials.
- Experience standing and working near and around moving mechanical parts.
- Must work in a moderate noise environment, with computers, printers, and light traffic.
- Air contaminants such as dust, fumes, and/or disagreeable odors.
Clearances:
- Criminal Justice Fingerprint/Background Clearance.
- Tuberculosis Skin Test.
Public Health Compliance
- Proof of COVID vaccination. Exemptions for religious/medical will be reviewed.
