Job Announcement

Serves as Senior Jury Clerk of the Jury Management Section in the Circuit Court. Coordinates the jury administrative process including jury scheduling, jury excusal requests, jury attendance tracking, jury orientation, and jury payroll process. Responsibilities include:

  • Serves as the main point of contact for prospective and current jurors. Answers questions and explains legal requirements of jury service, and the Circuit Court policies and procedures. Updates website to post weather-related court closures and jury status.
  • Orients prospective jurors on the daily jury process, juror payment, and the
  • Circuit Court policies and procedures.
  • Tracks daily juror attendance. Check in jurors by scanning summons and verifying identification of jurors.
  • Updates Court’s Jury Management System with juror attendance information to generate juror payments.
  • Coordinates ADA accommodations for jurors, i.e., scheduling sign language interpreters, electronic devices, or speech reading services.
  • Assists in assigning jurors to cases on the docket.
  • Assists with the annual jury questionnaire process.

Note: Physical presence at the worksite location during scheduled hours of work is required for this position.

Salary: The selected applicant's starting hourly rate will be in the minimum to midpoint range ($21.7330 to $28.9775) of the advertised compensation range. Promotional rules apply for current Fairfax County Government and Fairfax County Public Schools employees.

  • Serves as a resource, trainer, and technical expert in an assigned area;
  • Manages complex and technical cases that require the application of broad knowledge of the legal guidelines and procedures associated with the particular assignment;
  • May serve in a lead capacity over a team of clerks assigned to the same operational functions;
  • Assists the supervisor with staff scheduling, work assignment, training, and reviewing the work of unit staff;
  • Routinely trains and mentors less experienced staff;
  • Resolves more complex customer service issues received by phone, email, fax, mail, or in person;
  • Recommends process improvements and assists in implementation;
  • Serves as backup to supervisors in their absence.


Required Knowledge Skills and Abilities

  • Knowledge of the functions of the assigned business areas and/or court procedures;
  • Knowledge of the Code of Virginia, the Virginia Supreme Court's Clerk's Manual, laws and regulations related to the assigned business areas;
  • Knowledge of standard administrative procedures, practices, and equipment;
  • Ability to interpret and explain complex rules and regulations to staff and customers;
  • Ability to communicate courteously and effectively, both verbally and in writing;
  • Ability to motivate, train, and mentor staff;
  • Ability to develop and maintain effective working relationships with a variety of individuals, including the judges, general public, members of the legal and business community, and department staff.


Employment Standards

MINIMUM QUALIFICATIONS:
Any combination of education, experience, and training equivalent to the following:

Any combination of education, experience and training equivalent to high school graduation;
Plus three years of experience providing administrative support, technical support, customer service, or working in a court or legal environment.

NECESSARY SPECIAL REQUIREMENTS:
  • All newly hired employees will complete an attestation online related to their vaccination status against COVID-19 or a medical or religious exemption (forms provided by the agency) on their first date of employment or shortly thereafter. Employees who are not vaccinated, including persons with a medical or religious exemption, may be subject to a weekly testing requirement.
  • The appointee to the position will be required to complete a criminal background check to the satisfaction of the employer.

PREFERRED QUALIFICATIONS:
  • Four or more years of Court and/or legal experience.
  • Knowledge of the Code of Virginia and regulations in relevant areas.
  • Excellent attention to detail and organizational skills.
  • Clear and concise oral and written communication skills.
  • Experience working in a team environment.
  • Ability to exercise tact, discretion, initiative, creativity, and independent judgment.
  • Experience and proficiency in the use of Microsoft Office computer software, especially Word, Excel, and Outlook.

PHYSICAL REQUIREMENTS:
Must be able to push a cart, lift boxes, and files weighing up to 30 pounds. Must be able to stand for long periods of time. Must be able to input and retrieve data from a computer. All duties performed with or without reasonable accommodations.

SELECTION PROCEDURE:
Panel interview and may include a practical exercise.
