Fairfax County’s Wastewater Management Program is a nationally recognized Utility of the Future and its wastewater treatment plant, the 67 million gallon per day Noman M. Cole Pollution Control Plant, is a multiple year NACWA Platinum Award winning facility.   • Assists Industrial Electrician II or III in the installation, maintenance, and repair of electrical systems and equipment up to 5000 volts and 4000 amps; monitors electrical power distribution through out the plant using power monitors or the scada system.
  • Maintains equipment and associated controls as a part of the preventive maintenance program; replaces and/or repairs lighting fixtures, emergency lights and exit lights throughout the plant; makes repairs to equipment.
  • Performs preventive maintenance and repairs on various equipment including motors up to 1250 horse power and generators up to 2500 kilowatts.
  • Installs circuits for motors and motor controls and equipment using all types of wiring methods (i.e., rigid metal conduits up to four inch, armored cables, etc.).
  • Assists in troubleshooting, repairs and/or installation of main switchboards, main and branch circuits breakers, disconnects and wiring devices such as switches, convenience receptacles and dedicated receptacles.
  • Troubleshoots or assists in troubleshooting/repairing live electrical circuits with voltages up to 600 ac.
  • Diagnoses problems and repairs/replaces failed lighting systems and controls as well as electromagnetic and electronic ballasts on lighting equipment.
  • Operates assigned service vehicle and maintains inventory of spare parts.
  • Makes costs and material estimates.
  • Collects data for preventive maintenance system and maintains activity logs.
  • Responds to routine and emergency service calls after normal working hours.
  • Follows safety regulations and procedures.

  • Assists in troubleshooting, repairs and/or installation of main switchboards, main and branch circuit breakers, disconnects and wiring devices such as switches, convenience receptacles and dedicated receptacles;
  • Assists in the installation, maintenance, and repair of electrical systems, circuits and equipment up to 5000 volts and 4000 amps;
  • Monitors electrical power distribution throughout the plant using power monitors;
  • Performs a variety of skilled tasks in the preventative maintenance and repairs of 3-phase medium voltage industrial electrical equipment to include motors up to 500 horse power and generators up to 2500 kilowatts;
  • Uses operating and maintenance manuals to determine parts, maintenance and operational procedures per manufacturer's recommendations;
  • Makes costs and material estimates;
  • Assists in performing routine start-up and testing of emergency generators;
  • Operates assigned service vehicle and maintains inventory of spare parts;
  • Effectively communicates with customers, employees and supervisors;
  • Engages in safe working practices and complies with safety programs and guidelines;
  • Reports unsafe working conditions;
  • Complies with safety competencies.


Required Knowledge Skills and Abilities

  • Basic knowledge of computers;
  • Working knowledge of the equipment, standards, and practices of the electrical trade;
  • Working knowledge of applicable county, state and national electrical, NFPA and safety codes;
  • Working knowledge of safety regulations and procedures as well as common hazards associated with working with electricity;
  • Ability to read and interpret diagrams, schematics, blue prints and manuals;
  • Ability to distinguish different color wiring;
  • Ability to use personal computers for logging time or inputting information;
  • Ability to plan and perform work of the trade at the apprentice-level;
  • Ability to estimate time and material needs;
  • Ability to work in confined spaces;
  • Ability to comprehend confined space training;
  • Ability to comprehend and comply to safety practices;
  • Ability to maintain effective relationships with customers, employees and supervisors.


Employment Standards

MINIMUM QUALIFICATIONS:
Any combination of education, training, and experience equivalent to graduation from high school, or a GED issued by a state department of education or equivalent; successful completion of an approved electrician's apprentice program and two years of experience as an industrial electrician.

CERTIFICATES AND LICENSES REQUIRED:
A valid driver's license.

NECESSARY SPECIAL REQUIREMENTS:
The appointee to this position will be required to complete a criminal background check, a driver's license check, and a pre-employment physical examination to the satisfaction of the employer.

Subject to 24 hour call back and must, therefore, be able to work emergency overtime. Subject to working in adverse weather conditions and may be exposed to raw waste or environments generating methane gas. Ability to distinguish different color wiring.

All newly hired employees are required to be fully vaccinated against COVID-19 (two weeks after the last required dose) as a condition of employment or obtain approval of a medical or religious exemption prior to their start date. Proof of an exemption or vaccination status will be required during the pre-employment onboarding process. New employees who obtain an exemption from the vaccine mandate for medical or sincerely held religious beliefs may be subject to a weekly testing requirement. Vaccinated employees and employees with a medical or religious exemption will complete the attestation online on their first day of employment or shortly thereafter.

PREFERRED QUALIFICATIONS:
Knowledge of basic electrical theory and the functioning, Knowledge of maintenance of electrical motors and controls; tools, materials and testing equipment utilized in the electrical field. Some knowledge of safety regulations and accident prevention practices. Ability to acquire knowledge of blueprints and schematics. Ability to understand and follow oral and written instructions.

PHYSICAL REQUIREMENTS:
The ability to lift 50 to 75 pounds. Ability to work from ladders, steps, and extension. Able to distinguish wire colors (no color blindness). Must be able to bend, stoop, work in tiring and uncomfortable positions and confined space. All duties performed with or without reasonable accommodations.
