Job Announcement

Works under general supervision in the Police Department's Alcohol Test Unit. Performs venipuncture to measure blood alcohol content for lab analysis and to test for the presence of drugs. Appears in court during the daytime to testify regarding blood sample collection. Completes appropriate recording documents identifying activities and findings related to blood alcohol testing. Performs related work as required.

The core hours of the position are 9:00 p.m. to 8:30 a.m. rotating days off.

Illustrative Duties

  • In the presence of the arresting officer, draws blood to be tested for alcohol or drug content;
  • Places blood in vials to be sent to an outside laboratory for analysis;
  • Testifies in court as to test procedures and results;
  • Logs data on each test administered and maintains test records;
  • Deals with citizens tactfully and courteously under adverse conditions;
  • Produces documents under court order (Duces Tecum).

Employment Standards

MINIMUM QUALIFICATIONS:
Any combination of education, experience, and training equivalent to: High school graduation or a GED issued by a state department of education; plus, one year of medical or hospital experience performing venipuncture.

CERTIFICATES AND LICENSES REQUIRED:
  • Driver's License (Required)
  • Phlebotomy Technician Certification.

NECESSARY SPECIAL REQUIREMENTS:
The appointee to this position will be required to complete a criminal background check, credit check, driving record check, polygraph exam, tuberculosis test, and pre-employment medical exam to the satisfaction of the employer.

All newly hired employees are required to be fully vaccinated against COVID-19 (two weeks after the last required dose) as a condition of employment or obtain approval of a medical or religious exemption prior to their start date. Proof of an exemption or vaccination status will be required during the pre-employment onboarding process. New employees who obtain an exemption from the vaccine mandate for medical or sincerely held religious beliefs may be subject to a weekly testing requirement. Vaccinated employees and employees with a medical or religious exemption will complete the attestation online on their first day of employment or shortly thereafter.

PHYSICAL REQUIREMENTS:
Work requires the ability to operate keyboard driven equipment, to operate devices with tablet technologies, and to sit or stand for periods of time. Must be able to draw blood and operate a motor vehicle. All duties may be performed with or without reasonable accommodations.
